Meet Evan Snow (Creative Placemaker & Community Builder).

Meet Evan Snow, a remarkable force in the world of arts and culture, known for his eclectic mix of creativity, community spirit, and a dash of mindfulness. Hailing from the sun-soaked Broward County in South Florida, Evan is a true native who takes immense pride in nurturing his vibrant community.

With an unwavering passion for the arts, he has woven together a career that not only fuels his own aspirations but also uplifts those around him. As co-founder of Zero Empty Spaces, a creative placemaker, and a community builder, Evan's journey is nothing short of inspiring.

In the interview, Mark created Evan's fantasy cultural year. Expect some surprises.

Evan's professional journey kicked off in the corporate world, where he worked as a recruiter, navigating the 9-to-5 grind. But like many entrepreneurs, he felt a spark of inspiration after diving into TED Talks and motivational speeches.

This ignited a profound desire to pursue a more fulfilling path, leading him to embrace his true calling in the arts.

Recognising a cultural gap in Fort Lauderdale, Evan founded Choose954, a social movement aimed at revitalising Broward County through arts and community engagement. His mission was clear: to spotlight local talent and create memorable experiences that connected residents and visitors alike with the authentic spirit of the area.

As a true advocate for both arts and the environment, Evan watched the documentary "Chasing Coral," which propelled him to act on behalf of South Florida's precious coral reefs. He co-founded the Ocean Rescue Alliance and initiated the 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project, using art to raise awareness and restore these vital ecosystems.

Evan's vision for affordable artist studio spaces materialised with the launch of Zero Empty Spaces.

This innovative initiative transforms vacant commercial properties into vibrant artist studios, offering spaces starting at just $2.50 per square foot.

In just four years, ZES has expanded to 30 locations and welcomed over 600 artists, creating a supportive environment for creativity to flourish.

Evan’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Art Fort Lauderdale, an avant-garde art fair that invites attendees to explore art against the stunning backdrop of the intracoastal waterways. This initiative not only showcases local and international talent but also positions Fort Lauderdale on the global art map.

Evan's reflections on his journey culminated in the publication of his book, "Learning To Choose," where he shares pivotal choices and the lessons learned along the way. This work aims to inspire others to uncover their potential and make impactful changes in their lives and communities.

Today, Evan continues to advocate for wellness and creativity through initiatives like AAF Creative Zen, a monthly breakfast lecture series designed to inspire and connect the community. With a commitment to "Kind Collaboration," Evan welcomes opportunities to work with others in fostering a culture of innovation, creativity, and compassion.

Evan Snow’s journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passions and making a difference in the community. With a heart dedicated to arts, culture, and the environment, Evan embodies the spirit of a true change-maker, reminding us all that every choice we make can lead to a brighter future.

Interview summary

In Mark's interview with Evan, a passionate arts advocate and creative entrepreneur, shared the story of his organisation, zero empty spaces, Mark expressed appreciation for Evan's work and announced plans to create a fantasy cultural year for Evan based on his answers to ten questions.

Evan Snow’s fantasy cultural year, crafted by Mark Walmsley of the Arts and Culture Network, unfolds as an inspiring journey blending creativity, personal growth, and immersive art experiences. Based in Miami’s iconic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Evan embarks on an imaginative global journey, underpinned by a philanthropic foundation supporting his mission of “zero empty spaces”—activating vacant spaces for accessible artist studios.

Starting with a café terrace view of the museum, Evan selects “The Karma of Success” as his book of choice, paired with a mezcal margarita. The journey kicks off with a first-class trip to Portugal, where Evan, an ardent arts advocate, explores how repurposing vacant spaces could benefit communities and artists globally. In Lisbon, he immerses himself in local art, taking in a breakdancing performance and a football match featuring Portugal’s national team.

After Portugal, he heads to Croatia to experience a 3D VR exhibition, stepping into Edvard Munch's surreal landscapes. Evenings in Split bring an array of cultural experiences: attending a rock concert by Aerosmith, watching Hamilton, listening to Puccini’s Tosca, and finally, enjoying a Basquiat documentary at a grand cinema. His journey culminates with a Croatian cuisine tasting menu alongside Pharrell Williams, Franklin Sirmans of the Perez Art Museum, and Evan's business partner, all sparking impactful conversations on creative placemaking.

Concluding his cultural exploration, the foundation lifts the restriction on only listening to house music, allowing him to return to the soulful beats of Joe Kay’s Soulection Radio. This enriching year encapsulates Evan's transformative journey, supported by global arts advocates who share his vision of bringing art into the everyday spaces of cities worldwide.
