Meet Ram Rangarajan (Expressionist Artist).

Ram Rangarajan's life is a blend of unique artistry and technological ingenuity. With a passion for creation, his journey has taken him across India, the US, the UK, and the Middle East. In his 25-year career in the IT industry, he never strayed far from his artistic pursuits, proving that creativity and logic are not opposing forces but complementary strengths.

Mark Walmsley and Ram Rangarajan had a tangent-taking discussion about Ram's work and transition from corporate to creative. What better way to finish the conversational interview off by playing The This or That game!

Education and Early Foundations

Ram earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from RV College of Engineering (1991-1995), followed by a Master’s in Computer and Information Science from Cleveland State University (1996-1998).

Here, Ram’s IT career began in 1999, spanning roles from programming to leadership in digital product strategy. With a knack for analytical thinking and innovation, he held pivotal positions at leading organisations like Intellect Design Arena, and FSS.

The Artist’s Journey

Beyond office hours, Ram found his sanctuary in art. For over four decades, he has explored the intricate interplay of pencil sketches, charcoal, acrylics, and mixed media. His personal rule — dedicating focused, distraction-free time to art using the Pomodoro Technique — has been influential in maintaining his creativity in a demanding career.

In November 2024, Ram reached a personal milestone: a solo exhibition titled "Expression" at the DakshinaChitra Museum in Chennai. This event showcased his ability to transform fleeting moments and emotions into profound visual narratives. The exhibition not only celebrated his artistic evolution but also resonated deeply with viewers, blending traditional techniques with contemporary insights.

Art Philosophy: The Unscripted Process

Ram approaches art with a philosophy of spontaneity. For him, creating is an intuitive act, free from premeditation. His work delves into the human condition, using every medium—whether charcoal, acrylic, or pen—to evoke emotions that words often cannot express.

Ram’s life is a testament to the power of balance, proving that pursuing passion and profession need not be mutually exclusive. His journey has inspired many and today, Ram continues to push boundaries as an artist and thinker.

Whether curating exhibitions, sketching early in the morning, or mentoring others, his work serves as a reminder that life’s greatest achievements are often born at the crossroads of passion and perseverance.

For those seeking to connect with Ram, whether to commission a piece or provide feedback, his art remains not just a showcase of skill but a medium of heartfelt connection as an Expressionist Artist.

Interview summary

In the meeting, Mark, the founder of the Arts and Culture Network, introduced Ram Rangarajan, a full member of the network. Ram, an IT professional with a passion for art for over 40 years, shared his journey. Ram is based in Chennai, India.

Time management as an artist

Ram introduced the "Pomodoro Technique" as a time management strategy that helps focus on tasks. He went on to share his personal rules for this technique, which include using a black pen and paper, dedicating 30 minutes a day to drawing, and avoiding distractions like digital devices. He emphasised the importance of not thinking about drawing before or after the set time.

Flower design process

Ram discussed his iterative process of creating a flower design. He explained how he initially started with a blue segment and then added more lines and circles over time. He also shared how he added shading and contrast, and how the focus of the design shifted from the initial scope of improvement to the center of the flower. Ram demonstrated how the flower evolved over 16 days, with each day representing a new iteration of the design.

Creation

He shared a quote from Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, "To create a work of art is to create the world." Ram expressed that this quote resonated with him during an exhibition, as he felt he was not just creating art, but also the world through his thoughts and expressions.

This or That Game Preferences

Mark and Ram played the fast-paced and fun This or That game" where Ram had to choose between two options provided by Mark. The game involved various choices such as still or sparkling water, Mac or PC, tea or coffee, and more. They discussed their preference for an art gallery over a museum, Beethoven over Mozart, cooking over being cooked for, snow over sand, salsa over reggae, history over science, New York over Los Angeles, Paris over London, and numbers over words. They also shared their sleep patterns, desk organisation, and preferred bedroom door status. The conversation concluded with a preference for seeing the future over changing the past.
