This profile is just one of them. Meet Andreas van Zoelen (Keeper of Saxophone Secrets, Collector of Stories) and discover his fantasy cultural year. If saxophones could talk, Andreas van Zoelen ’s collection would be a cacophony of tales, some whispering of bygone jazz bars, others bellowing about concert halls long turned to dust. But since they can’t, he does the talking for them. A saxophonist, conductor, professor, and accidental museum curator, van Zoelen is a man whose curiosity has taken him deep into the labyrinthine history of the instrument. A professor of classical saxophone at Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg, Netherlands, Andreas spends his days shaping the next generation of saxophonists and his nights poring over the peculiarities of historical saxophones. His collection - more than 130 instruments strong - isn’t just an assemblage of shiny curiosities; it’s a timeline in brass, a testament to the quirks and craftsmanship of saxophonists past. The Accidental Collector It all started with a bit of happenstance. In the 1990s, as a young music student sitting in on lessons, he found himself drawn to an old baritone saxophone perched in his teacher’s room, soaking up the light from the window. Alongside it was a Conn straight-neck C melody sax, another oddity that piqued his interest. Then, one day, the teacher left, and with a nod to fate (and perhaps some relief at offloading them), he sold both instruments to Andreas for a nominal sum. That small moment of acquisition turned into an obsession. Soon came along an alto sax from Belgium with two octave keys (who knew?), a high-pitched tenor, and an insatiable desire to learn more. “I tried playing them, tried understanding their historical context, asked myself all kinds of questions about them,” he recalls. And so began a lifelong pursuit of saxophonic secrets. Scholar, Performer, and Keeper of the Saxophone Flame Andreas van Zoelen isn’t just about collecting. He’s a performer of global renown, having played with orchestras like the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle, the SWR Symphonieorchester, and philharmonie zuidnederland. He’s rubbed shoulders with rock royalty like Stewart Copeland (The Police) and contemporary music icons such as Arvo Pärt and Fazıl Say. Since 2014, he has been the tenor saxophonist of the legendary Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, stepping into the role once held by founding member Bruce Weinberger. With this acclaimed group, he tours the world, performing and teaching masterclasses, spreading the legacy of Sigurd Raschèr and keeping the unique saxophone tradition alive. Andreas van Zoelen plays van Dijk Bass Saxophone Concerto A dedicated researcher, Andreas earned his Ph.D. from Vrije Universiteit Brussels in 2021, defending a thesis that linked the Raschèr tradition to the legacy of Adolphe Sax. His deep dive into history even caught the attention of royalty. He received a personal message from King Albert II of Belgium congratulating him on his academic achievements. The Online Museum: A Digital Home for Brass Relics Realising that saxophone history was too rich to keep to himself, Andreas founded saxophonemuseum.online , an online repository where enthusiasts can explore the winding road of saxophone evolution. More than a showcase , it’s a meeting place for players, repairers, and fellow collectors, because what’s the point of hoarding knowledge if you can’t share it? “I never thought, when I found my first ‘old’ saxophone, that it would once become a collection like the one you are looking at now,” he says. “But if you’re truly enthusiastic about something, follow your own nose!” Champion of New Music Andreas doesn’t just look to the past; he’s a force in shaping the saxophone’s future. More than 140 works have been composed especially for him, a number that continues to grow as he commissions and premieres new pieces. His 2021 album For Now and Forever cemented his reputation as a champion of contemporary saxophone repertoire, presenting fresh compositions for the instrument in innovative settings. A Living Legacy From teaching at Fontys to performing on the world’s grandest stages, from uncovering the secrets of antique saxophones to commissioning new works, Andreas van Zoelen is a man who has turned a lifelong fascination into a multi-faceted career. He’s part scholar, part performer, part historian, and ... most of all, an insatiable explorer of the saxophone’s many voices. JS Bach's Fugue N.22 performed by the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet Andreas van Zoelen's fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Andreas embarked on an imaginative exploration of his passions for music, saxophones and facts. A Global Study in the history of the saxophone Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Andreas: a worldwide study exploring the history of the saxophone. This project would lead to a TED Talk, a book deal, a TV series, and a university lecture tour of North America, Europe, Scandinavia, and Asia. Andreas proposed to start research in Dinant, which is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax (Andreas's favourite author and inspiration). As part of this journey, he accepted an experimental challenge, to immerse himself exclusively in one music genre for his years travel, surprisingly he chose no music at all! Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Andrea’s "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. H e would then attend a dance performance, which could be any style he desired - ballet, the premiere of the Sacco du Pantan. The purpose of this project was to inspire a book that would start with research and gradually transform into a story. In France, Mark and Andreas planned a week of cultural indulgence: Escargot. snails in Paris and white wine. They watched a cricket game and visited Adolphe Sax's imaginary digitally enhanced art gallery. Music recollections Mark and Andreas reminisced about their favourite concerts and artists. Andreas decided to go back in time and see a young Freddie Mercury in action in the more intimate surroundings of a club. Favourite Movies, Musicals, and Future Plans They both whisked themselves to The Globe Theatre to watch some Shakespeare - Henry V. They also planned a future outing, with Mark booking a table at a restaurant in Dinold overlooking the river there, and invited Andreas to choose a lunch partner. Not surprisingly perhaps he chose Adolphe Sax. Through this imaginative exercise, Andrea's fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging saxophones, music, and history. This profile is just one of them. Meet Clint White (Marketing Maverick) and discover his fantasy cultural year. Cl int White doesn’t do boring. He doesn’t do cookie-cutter. And he certainly doesn’t do ordinary. A master of making modest budgets feel like moonshots, Clint has spent nearly three decades flipping the script on traditional marketing, bending media to his will, and helping brands- challenger, startup, or otherwise - punch well above their weight. A Crain’s New York Business Top Entrepreneur, he’s the brains behind Tattoos, Not Brands , a book, podcast , and consultancy that challenges businesses to ditch the rigid, forgettable branding playbook and instead leave a permanent, meaningful mark. The Origin Story: Ink Before Influence Clint cut his teeth in marketing with a literary and cultural studies background from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he flexed his storytelling muscles in English and African American Studies. From there, he took an eclectic route through arts, media, and strategy, because who wants a straight-line career anyway? He honed his strategic chops at the Whitney Museum of American Art, navigated the world of movement and momentum with Martha Graham Dance Company, and even managed international tours for the Santa Fe Opera. The Media Whisperer By the late ‘90s, Clint was shaping how arts and culture intersect with commerce, heading marketing efforts at Eliran Murphy Group and then founding WiT Media Inc. in 2009. Here, he built an agency that made sure every media dollar worked like an overachiever, serving clients from Luxury Retreats (acquired by Airbnb) to E*Trade, Mass Mutual, and Lincoln Center. Not one to stay in just one lane, Clint soon launched Simple Media Buying and Political Media Buying , harnessing omnichannel strategy to create impact across e-commerce, fintech, healthcare, social impact campaigns, and beyond. Ink Over Impressions: Tattoos, Not Brands In 2021, Clint decided to do something different, again. He founded Tattoos, Not Brands, a full-on marketing ecosystem challenging businesses to think beyond temporary recognition and instead create lasting meaning. Through a book , podcast , and consultancy, he and his team of marketing mavericks take real-world challenges and solve them with creativity, experience, and a refusal to conform. The Educator and Investor When he’s not reshaping the media landscape, Clint is busy teaching the next wave of thinkers and doers. He’s designed and taught courses at The New School, NYU, and even Sotheby’s Institute of Art, covering everything from arts administration to digital marketing. On the investment side, he advises and funds ventures in fashion, fintech, housewares, and sustainability, because disruption doesn’t just happen in one industry. The Bigger Picture Along the way, Clint was recognised at the Social Impact Summit at the United Nations for driving social change through media. He even advised the Obama White House Office of Public Engagement on Social Impact Media. From the opera house to e-commerce, from non-profits to political campaigns, Clint White continues to redefine how brands connect, leaving a permanent mark rather than a passing impression. Because in Clint’s world, if it doesn’t last, it doesn’t matter. Clint White's fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Clint embarked on an imaginative exploration of his passions - branding, the arts and promotion. Setting the scene Mark and Clint discussed their shared interest in architecture, particularly concrete buildings. Mark placed Clint in the Barbican Centre in London, a concrete structure for which Clint expressed admiration. They agreed on the setting, with Clint enjoying a gin and tonic and a book about concrete architecture on the terrace of the Barbican Centre. A Global Study in arts branding Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded one year journey for Clint: a worldwide study on the success of branding in the arts sector. This project would involve a PA, a healthy fee, and the opportunity to give a TED Talk, lecture tour, book deal, and TV series. Clint proposed to start research in London. As part of this journey, he accepted an experimental challenge, to immerse himself exclusively in one music genre for his year of travel, choosing classical music. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Clint's "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. H e would then attend a dance performance, selecting Sadler's Wells Theatre, where Ballet Rombert would perform a show called "Let's surprise you." Clint expressed his interest in seeing works in progress and surprising performances, highlighting the improvisational nature of contemporary dance. They discussed their preferences for food and sports. Mark suggested a modern Indian fusion restaurant in London, which Clint had previously enjoyed. They also planned to watch the men's final at Wimbledon. Additionally, they discussed the possibility of visiting a new digital art gallery in the Barbican Centre, where they could experience the work of famous artists through virtual reality. Clint expressed a particular interest in the work of Agnes Martin. Planning Mark planned to spend a week with Clint in London. They would attend various events, including a pop or rock show, a theatre play, a Broadway musical, an opera, and a cinema. Clint expressed his desire to not program himself too much and to have a serendipitous experience. Mark then decided to surprise Clint by choosing the events for them, with Clint's preferences in mind. Favourite Movies, Musicals, and Future Plans Mark suggested they attend a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theatre and see Matilda again. For opera, Mark was torn between challenging pieces like Bluebeard's Castle and the classic Tosca. In film, Mark recommended the long movie, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. Before leaving for the research project, Mark proposed a Hero Day where Clint could invite anyone, living or not, to a Michelin-starred South Asian restaurant. Clint chose his wife as the guest, noting her passion for creative restaurateurs and chefs. Through this imaginative exercise, Clint's fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging branding, marketing, and culture. - Kadira Jennings - Transcendent Artist and Creator of Quantum Spiralism.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Kadira Jennings (Transcendent Artist and Creator of Quantum Spiralism) and discover her fantasy cultural year. Some artists paint what they see; Kadira Jennings paints what she feels, senses, and envisions in the hidden folds of reality. Kadira is a Transcendent Artist and the mastermind behind Quantum Spiralism, an art form that intertwines crystal spirals, quantum physics, and an unwavering belief in the power of energy transference. Born in Tauranga, New Zealand, in 1952, Kadira’s artistic journey began at the age of 15, when she first put brush to canvas to capture a lone pine tree. Little did she know, that moment would spiral into a lifelong pursuit of creativity that defies conventional boundaries. Kadira’s early years were shaped by a military family’s nomadic lifestyle, moving between England and New Zealand. Ancient English forests, crumbling Roman ruins, and the rugged, untamed landscapes of New Zealand all seeped into her subconscious, planting the seeds of a deep-rooted fascination with wilderness, time, and the unseen forces that shape existence. After honing her craft at the Elam School of Fine Art in Auckland under the tutelage of the legendary Colin McCahon, Kadira took a brief detour to raise her family. But artistic passion, once awakened, rarely slumbers for long. In 1981, she relocated to Australia, where she threw herself back into the world of art, learning from celebrated Australian artists such as Judith White, David Andrews, John Morris, Bela Ivanyi, and Kristine Ballard. Now based in Springfield, on Australia’s Central Coast, Kadira has a practise she does before even lifting her brush. She meditates, raising her vibrational frequency to infuse each piece with intention. Art, for her, is not just pigment on a surface but a conduit for higher consciousness, a silent conversation between creator and viewer. Her work spans Floralscapes, Landscapes, and the evocative realm of Abstract Realism where tangible forms meet the ephemeral. Lately, endangered species have become a focal point, as she documents the fragile balance between nature and human impact, using art as both a warning and a celebration of what still remains. Kadira’s paintings have found homes in public and private collections across Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and beyond. Her creations are talismans, vibrating with an inner luminescence, calling forth memories, emotions, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Beyond the canvas, Kadira is an impassioned educator. Through her art school, Art Classes Central Coast , she champions the belief that everyone is inherently creative. Whether through teaching, mentoring, or her own artistic explorations, she invites others to ask: “What am I creating? Am I the highest expression of myself?” With exhibitions spanning decades and accolades in tow, including a merit award from Light & Space online gallery and the Margaret Smith Memorial Art Prize, Kadira continues to push artistic frontiers. Her process, deeply rooted in the Krystal Spiral, begins with an intuitive underpainting, layered with symbolism, oil glazes, and a magnetic interplay between the seen and unseen. As the world rushes past in a blur of digital noise, Kadira Jennings stands firm, brush in hand, conjuring visions from the quantum field, an artist of the unseen, painting not just for the eye, but for the soul. Kadira Jenning's fantasy cultural year + This and That game Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Kadira Jennings embarked on an imaginative exploration of her passions, energy, the universe and art. Watch the interview above. A Global Study in the convergence of spirituality, quantum physics, and art Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Kadira: a worldwide study to create a league table of how well these three elements have converged in each country visited, with examples of the output art and interviews with the artists. The study would involve a global lecture tour, a TV series, a TED Talk, and a book deal. Kadira would be provided with a significant fee, 1st class travel, and a team of personal assistants to manage her admin. The study would begin in New Zealand, which Kadira identified as the root of her creativity. Setting the scene Kadira revealed her favourite building is the Rialto Bridge in Venice, which Mark used to place her in a virtual setting. They both recalled their experiences in Venice, with Kadira mentioning having tea at Florian's cafe, a famous spot in St. Mark's Square. Mark then shared a virtual tour of the location, placing Kadira at Florian's cafe. Kadira and Mark discussed potential locations for a trip, with Queenstown in the South Island being a top choice. They also considered the idea of limiting musical listening to one specific type of music for a year. Kadira chose ambient or mindfulness music. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Kadira’s "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. She envisioned arriving in Queenstown and is whisked away to a luxurious loft apartment. They then attend a ballet performance by the New Zealand National Ballet, followed by dinner at an Italian restaurant. The next day, they watch ice-skating as the sport of choice. The purpose of this project was to inspire a book that would start with research and gradually transform into a story. Mark and Kadira discussed their plans for a week-long cultural trip together. They decided to attend a pop/rock show, a theatre play, a West End/Broadway musical, an opera, and a cinema screening. They also used a time machine to attend concerts by U2 and Pink Floyd in their respective primes. Additionally, they considered attending a live performance of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" by Dream Theater. Theatre and Music Recollections Kadira and Mark discussed various topics, including a play called Ecocide written by Kadira's brother, which won the Edinburgh Art prize. They also talked about attending a West End or Broadway musical, with Mark suggesting performances of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story or the original cast of Wicked. Kadira expressed her preference for Puccini's music, which her parents played when she was young. Through this imaginative exercise, Kadira’s fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging energy, the universe and art. - Jean Vincent Naurais - Digital Art Futurist.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Jean Vincent Naurais (Digital Art Futurist) and discover his fantasy cultural year. Je an Vincent Naurais isn’t your typical art aficionado. Sure, he’s an art collector, investor, and downright obsessive lover of all things creative, but he’s also got a firm foot planted in the tech world, specifically where art meets virtual reality. He’s the visionary behind Artmonad , a Miami-based Art-Tech startup determined to integrate traditional art display methods into the 21st century. Before he became a tech-savvy art revolutionary, Jean Vincent (or JV as he is known by his friends) spent 25 years navigating the real estate world, watching fine art climb the ladder from mere decorative delight to an investment powerhouse rivalling gold. He came to a firm conclusion: art isn’t just for admiring, it’s a strategic asset, a tangible slice of cultural wealth. But here’s the rub: while collectors see art as a goldmine, many artists are still scraping by, struggling for exposure in a market where physical galleries dominate. That’s where Jean Vincent saw an opportunity. With advancements in 3D visualisation, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and the rise of Web3, he knew the art world needed a digital shake-up. And so, Artmonad was born. With Artmonad, Jean Vincent aims to level the playing field. His vision? A world where artists don’t have to beg for wall space. Instead, they showcase their work in 3D galleries, accessible on any device, in VR with a headset, in AR exhibitions, or even via projection mapping. Oh, and thanks to smart contracts, they can finally secure those elusive perpetual royalties on their work. No more losing out in the resale shuffle. But this isn’t just about pretty virtual galleries. Artmonad is a business-first solution, powered by top-tier e-commerce and AI. Artists get tools that free them from the tangled mess of web design and sales management, allowing them to focus on what truly matters, creating. Plus, their work gets digitally preserved in immersive, evolving 3D environments. For collectors, Artmonad delivers a seamless, one-click immersive experience. No need to travel to exclusive galleries, just hop into a guided 3D tour from the comfort of your couch. The stats speak for themselves: people spend 10 times longer on a 3D site, with click-through rates skyrocketing 20-fold. It’s not just a gimmick; it’s a game-changer. Jean Vincent firmly believes we’re at the tipping point of an irreversible art-tech revolution. The future of art isn’t static, it’s dynamic, immersive, and deeply interactive. And he’s not just watching from the sidelines; he’s in the thick of it, making sure artists and collectors alike don’t get left behind in the digital dust. Jean Vincent Naurais' fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Jean Vincent Naurais embarked on an imaginative exploration of his passions, technology, art and new talent. Setting the Scene Starting at Jean's favourite building, Mark and Jean imagined themselves in a cafe beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Jean chose an Aperol Martini as his drink and a book titled "The Power of the Healing by Hand" by Barbara Brennan as his favourite book. Jean had read it 30 years ago, having a significant impact on his spiritual perspective and understanding of life. A Global Study for Emerging Artists Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Jean: a worldwide study involving the creation of a digital gallery dedicated to emerging artists worldwide. The task would involve finding unknown artists and their best work, photographing them, and creating a virtual exhibition. The study would involve a global lecture tour, a TV series, a TED Talk, and a book deal. Jean suggested starting in Miami Beach and then moving to Africa, specifically Kenya, to explore the work of young artists. Mark agreed to this plan, suggesting Jean travel to Mombasa, a coastal city in Kenya, to begin the year-long research. The catch to go on this trip was that Jean could only listen to one genre of music for the whole year. Jean expressed a preference for ambient music, particularly Tibetan folk music, for relaxation Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Jean's "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. When Jean arrives in Mombasa and is taken to a waterfront property, he had to choose a dance performance to watch, with no restrictions on the dancer, group, or style. Jean wanted to experience a traditional African dance performance, specifically one that involves fast footwork. Mark agreed to this idea and suggested that Jean could visit a local village on a bicycle to witness the performance. He also showed interest in trying local cuisine during their stay in Mombasa, despite some reservations about the taste. Mark suggested that Jean could choose his meal by observing what others are eating. They also discussed the possibility of attending a sporting event in Mombasa, with Jean expressing a preference for a non-violent sport. Mark then proposed the idea of a rowing festival in Mombasa, which he showed interest in attending. Exploring Art Forms and Experiences Mark and Jean engaged in a lively discussion about various art forms and experiences. Jean expressed interest in stepping into the digital art gallery in Mombasa, with a preference for his wife's artwork. They also discussed attending a pop or rock show, with Jean suggesting a multi-artist event. For theatre, they decided to watch a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theatre in London, and for opera, they chose to attend a performance at La Scala, Milan. Lastly, they discussed their preferences for movies and TV series, with Jean expressing a preference for series due to their ability to engage the viewer over a longer period. Through this imaginative exercise, Jean's fantasy cultural year emerged as a lively, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging technology, galleries and art. Krista Reynders is a wildlife photographer and the founder of YGQ Solutions a cyber security firm, she has seamlessly woven her passion for photography with her deep commitment to wildlife conservation and cultural heritage. Krista’s lens is drawn to the untamed beauty of wildlife, the grandeur of landscapes, and the silent histories whispered by old infrastructure buildings. Through her work, she captures more than just images; she tells stories, of resilience, survival, and the delicate balance of nature. Every frame is a testament to her respect for the natural world and her desire to share its wonders with others. Her journey into photography was driven by a need to document and protect the things she loves. By collaborating with conservation organisations and sanctuaries like Love Lions Alive Sanctuary in South Africa, Krista uses her art to raise awareness and inspire action. Her photographs serve as both a tribute and a call to arms, urging people to see the world differently and to play their part in its preservation. Beyond her work with wildlife, Krista finds beauty in forgotten places, abandoned structures, weathered by time, each holding echoes of the past. She believes that architecture, like nature, tells a story of survival and adaptation. Her images breathe life into these spaces, capturing the artistry in decay and the interplay of history and environment. Krista’s approach to photography is intuitive and immersive. She doesn’t just observe; she connects, with her subjects, with the landscapes, and with the very essence of the moment. Whether she’s deep in the wilderness or exploring the remnants of forgotten civilisations, she seeks to create a bridge between art, culture, and conservation. But Krista’s expertise isn’t limited to photography. She is also a highly respected Cyber Security and Resiliency professional, with over two decades of experience in the field. YGQ Solutions isn’t just another cyber security firm. It carries the namesake of Krista’s beloved dogs, Yogi, Goofy, and Qwin, a show of her belief in the harmony between technology and the natural world. The company even embraces a pet-friendly culture (yes, office cats and dogs are absolutely a thing here). And through YGQ Solutions, she demonstrates that art and technology can coexist, both playing a crucial role in shaping a safer and more sustainable world. Her photography isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about impact. And in every click of the shutter and every cyber security strategy she develops, Krista is reminding us of the world’s fragile beauty, and our responsibility to protect it. So, if you’re looking for a cyber security expert who speaks fluent tech but also understands the rhythm of the wild, Krista Reynders is your person. Whether it’s fortifying your business against digital threats or capturing nature’s raw beauty, she’s always at the frontline, securing, creating, and making an impact, one keystroke and shutter click at a time. Krista Reynders' fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Krista Reynders embarked on an imaginative exploration of her passions photography, animals and the world. A Global Documentary using photography Given Krista's talent for expressing perspective, journeys, focal points and an invitation to follow a pathway (see above,) Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Krista: a worldwide study focusing on documenting journeys and pathways through photographic images, following Krista's travels. The fictional study would involve a global lecture tour, a TV series, a TED Talk, and a book deal. The catch to go on this trip was that Krista could only listen to one genre of music for the whole year. She chose Celine Dion. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Krista's "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. Mark and Krista discussed their travel plans, starting with Krista arriving in Nairobi and meeting young photographers. They went on a dance performance and dinner, featuring a dream dance performance by Cirque du Soleil and having Thai food. They then flew to Tanzania, where they watched a sporting event, with Krista expressing her preference for tennis. Next, they visited a digitally enhanced art gallery in Johannesburg, exploring the work of an artist in virtual reality. Krista chose Paul Cezanne's work, and they immersed themselves in his work. They ended the day with a picnic in a canoe, discussing their next destination in London. Exploring Art Forms and Experiences Mark and Krista discussed their cultural and artistic plans for the weekdays: On Monday, they went back in time to attend a pop or rock concert, with Krista suggesting a Celine Dion concert. On Tuesday, they would watch a theatre play, with Mark suggesting a Shakespeare play at the Globe Theatre. Wednesday would be dedicated to a West End or Broadway musical, with Krista expressing a preference for Cats or The Lion King. On Thursday, they would attend an opera, with Krista suggesting Andrea Bocelli as a performer. Finally, on Friday, they would go to the cinema, with Krista suggesting a Lord of the Rings film. Mark also mentioned a past experience of watching all three Lord of the Rings films in one day. Through this imaginative exercise, Krista's fantasy cultural year was an adventure-filled journey, bridging photography, nature and animals. This profile is just one of them. Meet Larissa Hope (filmmaker, actress and neuroscience graduate) and discover her fantasy cultural year. Some people pick a lane and stay in it. Larissa Hope ? She built the road, detoured through a film set, stopped by a neuroscience lab, and somehow still made it home in time for bedtime stories with her daughter, Namiko. The start of the acting biz Seventeen and straight into the deep end, Larissa made her TV debut as Jal Fazer in Skins , the show that shaped a generation. From there, she shared screens with Stephen Fry, Ruth Negga, and Joseph Marcell, appearing in Kingdom , Trollied , and The Town . A leading role in the cult horror Tormented even saw her facing off against Alex Pettyfer and some seriously vengeful ghosts. But the biggest plot twist? Larissa stepping away from the limelight, not for lack of talent, but for something far bigger ... herself. The dive in the mind A severe mental health crisis pulled her focus inward, setting her on an unexpected but deeply intentional path. Swapping scripts for textbooks, she earned a BA in Creative Writing and Psychology from Kingston University, graduating with first-class honours. But one degree wasn’t enough, because why stop when you can unravel the mysteries of the brain? Larissa pursued an MSc in Neuroscience at King’s College London, diving deep into the neural mechanics of trauma, healing, and resilience. She even secured an equivalent master’s in Traumatic Stress Studies from the Trauma Research Foundation, because, if nothing else, Larissa Hope is thorough. From award-winning filmmaker to empowering the community Yet, the creative spark never flickered out. An award-winning filmmaker, Larissa’s short film has racked up accolades across international festivals. Her work, much like her life, orbits around themes of survival, transformation, and the intricate dance between mind and body. She also founded a creative writing therapy group for women, helping them give voice to stories they may have never dared to tell. Beyond academia and the arts, Larissa is a force for good. She volunteers as a breastfeeding support worker, helping new mothers navigate the tricky science of latching and attachment. She’s also taken on policy scrutiny for her local council, bridging the gap between tenants and decision-makers. And in a previous life (okay, just a few years back), she was part of the My Guide program, helping visually impaired individuals regain confidence and independence. These days, between neuroscience research, film projects, and raising Namiko, Larissa somehow finds time to be a sought-after public speaker. She’s regularly invited to panels discussing the intersection of creativity, mental health, and the wonders (and occasional betrayals) of the human brain. In short: Larissa Hope doesn’t do small. She doesn’t do ordinary. But she does do impact. And she does it with heart, humour, and a knack for making the impossible seem inevitable. Larissa Hope's fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Larissa Hope embarked on an imaginative exploration of her passions— science and art. A Global Study in neuroscience Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Larissa: a worldwide study on exploring neuroscience and the benefits of creative activities through a social documentary. Larissa aimed to incorporate elements of fantasy and mysticism by tapping into the unconscious mind's role in creativity in her theoretical research trip. This project would lead to a TED Talk, a book, a TV series, and a university lecture tour. Larissa proposed to start research in Australia. As part of this journey, she accepted an experimental challenge—to immerse herself exclusively in 80s soul. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they continued to design Larissa’s "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. She envisioned a beachside loft apartment with a view of the Opera House and the bridge. She would then attend a dance performance at the Opera House, which could be any style she desired. The purpose of this project was to inspire a book that would start with research and gradually transform into a story. In Australia, Mark and Larissa planned a week of cultural indulgence: a Samba show, a dance with the performers, and a barbecue on the terrace. The next day, they planned to watch a sport event, with larissa expressing interest in swimming. Mark informed her that there was a high dive competition and open water swimming races happening in Sydney, which they could watch from their balcony. They also discussed the possibility of visiting a new, digitally enhanced art gallery in Sydney. Music recollections Mark and Larissa reminisced about their favorite concerts and artists. Mark shared his experiences of attending Michael Jackson's Bad Tour and Prince's Love Sexy Tour at Wembley Arena. He expressed regret for missing Bob Marley's 1975 concert, which was recorded as Live at the Rainbow. Favorite Movies, Musicals, and Future Plans Larissa and Mark discussed their favorite movies, musicals, and plays. larissa expressed her love for "Kinky Boots" and "Carmen," while Mark suggested "Forrest Gump" as a comfort film. They also planned a future outing, with Mark booking a table at a restaurant overlooking the bay in Sydney for a leisurely lunch. larissa decided to invite her friend Lily, an actress, to the event. However, Mark added a twist by asking who she would invite as a surprise for Lily. Through this imaginative exercise, Larissa’s fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey—bridging neuroscience, the arts, and human consciousness. - Steve Cook - The Master of Disruption.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Steve Cook (Co founder of social strategy collective The Undaunted) and discover his fantasy cultural year. Some people fit neatly into the boxes society provides. Steve Cook , however, prefers to scribble all over them, set them on fire, and build something altogether more interesting from the ashes. A neuroconvergent systemic thinker, punk at heart, and chaos conductor by trade, Steve has spent 60 years not just navigating the labyrinth of human existence but actively dismantling its dead ends. Through his work with The Undaunted , The Unheard Scream , and The Community of the Undaunted , he’s been orchestrating a new kind of social change, one that lives in the cracks between ideologies, histories, and rigid societal structures. So, if you’re expecting a traditional biography, you might want to recalibrate. Let’s dance with the monsters, shall we? Early Creative Chaos: The Art School Years (1980-1984) Steve’s journey into structured rebellion began at Watford School of Art, where he honed his conceptual thinking through the D&AD Advertising programme. He didn’t just pass; he thrived, earning an A+ with Highly Commended across all assignments, a feat that signalled his ability to play within the system while simultaneously questioning its every rule. The Advertising and Branding Rollercoaster (1985-2005) From 1985 to 2000, Steve threw himself into the high-octane world of advertising and direct marketing, working across B2C and B2B accounts in increasingly strategic roles. He wielded his creative mind for the likes of Vodafone, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, The AA, Abbey National, and Amnesty International, among many others. But let’s not pretend it was all smooth sailing, Steve was never one to simply sell things; he wanted to disrupt, redefine, and create meaning. Then came the Soviet adventure. Between 1990 and 1992, he found himself in the Soviet State Advertising Agency (SOVERO), smack dab in the middle of the USSR’s transformation. Tasked with guiding 400 creative and film production staff into a new world of “Western” marketing, he helped transition a state-run monopoly into a competitive agency that could survive the post-Soviet free market, because if there’s one thing Steve thrives on, it’s reprogramming broken systems. By 2002, he was steering global brand strategies as Global Head of Brand at RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), pushing for international recognition and ensuring that 120,000 Chartered Surveyors got the status they deserved. But as ever, corporate structures were just a pit stop on the way to something bigger. From Strategy to Systemic Rebellion (2005-Present) From 2005 to 2015, Steve operated as an independent Organisation Strategist, shaping the futures of global enterprises, startups, third-sector organisations, and government initiatives across the UK, EU, and beyond. His work encompassed business transformation, cultural shifts, mergers, and even entire market behaviour reconfigurations. But something was still missing ... real, human-centred impact. Enter V. A Strategy Practice (2016-Present) With a mission to flick the V’s at barriers to change, Steve and his team have been helping leaders redefine their purpose and execute visionary change strategies. His work is not about tinkering at the edges; it’s about dismantling, rebuilding, and making space for something better. The Undaunted Era: Dancing with Monsters for The Great Unfuck (2021-Present) In 2021, Steve co-founded The Undaunted, The Unheard Scream, and Unstitution, three interconnected initiatives aimed at tackling systemic social failure. The Undaunted isn’t just an organisation; it’s a movement, an art form, and an open invitation to reimagine how society functions. The Unheard Scream is the deep-dive storytelling and research engine, gathering unheard voices and making sense of the chaos. The Undaunted provides high-impact strategic advice to organisations ready to embrace real change. Unstitution is the collaborative impact coalition machine, fostering change from the grassroots up. Steve has also taken up the role of Conductor in Residence and Social Strategy Lead at The Undaunted, ensuring that this movement doesn’t just challenge the status quo, it burns it down and builds something human-centred in its place. Most recently, in 2024, he co-launched The Community of the Undaunted, an intentional space for rediscovering the art of being human, fostering collective action, and turning systemic overwhelm into empowered impact. So, what’s next? Steve Cook isn’t here to play by the rules. He’s here to write new ones, remix the old ones, and ensure that no one gets left behind in the process. Whether through his work with The Undaunted, his past life in strategy and branding, or his refusal to be daunted by any challenge, one thing’s for certain: the monsters don’t stand a chance. Steve Cook's fantasy cultural year Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Mark Walmsley, Steve Cook embarked on an imaginative exploration of his passion ... social, systematic change. A Global Study in non-linear societies Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Steve: a worldwide study on non-linear societies, focusing on studying the loss of curiosity and importance of arts and culture. Steve suggested beginning in Pike Place Market in Seattle. As part of this journey, he accepted an experimental challenge, to immerse himself exclusively in post-punk, particularly Mogwai's music for a year. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they began to design Steve’s "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and a time machine. Upon arriving in Seattle, Steve settled into a loft apartment overlooking the market with access to sustainable transportation options. He chose ballet as the dance performance he would like to watch. Mark agreed with Steve's choices and suggested a dinner of pie with gravy after the ballet performance. The next day, they planned to watch a sport, with Stephen choosing squash, a sport he enjoyed in his youth and considered to have an artistic element Art, Music, and Social Change Mark and Steve discussed the concept of stepping into the work of famous artists in a virtual reality setting. Steve expressed his admiration for Joseph Beuys, a German artist, and shared his experiences with him, including curating an exhibition in New York. He also mentioned his shared traits with Beuys, such as looking at society and injustice, and thinking in patterns and systems. The two reminisced about concerts they had missed in the past. Stephen expressed regret for not attending The Cure's concert at the Sydney Opera House and the Rock Against Racism Festival in 1978, where Tom Robinson and The Clash performed. Mark wished he had gome to Bob Marley at the Rainbow in 1977. Hero day Mark gave Steve the chance to invite anyone for lunch. He chose his wife and his musical hero, Ian Curtis from Joy Division. Through this imaginative exercise, Steve’s fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging unmasking, identity and expression. This profile is just one of them. Meet Romy Birchler (Intuitive digital creator and change agent) and discover her fantasy cultural year. If you ever find yourself in a room with Romy Birchler , prepare to have a conscious conversation of creativity and connection. An intuitive digital creator with an eye for storytelling and an ear for meaningful dialogue, Romy blends artistry with impact. The Journey Begins: Creativity Meets Consciousness From the outset, Romy’s path was never going to be conventional. Instead of following a well-trodden route, she wove together skills, experiences, and insights, guided by an innate curiosity and a deep reverence for the world around her. Photography, storytelling, and digital media became the paintbrushes with which she coloured her journey, while a passion for conscious and sustainable living provided the canvas. The Art of Building and Belonging Not content with simply creating beautiful things, Romy felt a pull towards something deeper — building communities, platforms, and spaces where conscious business practices and sustainability weren’t just buzzwords but the very foundation of engagement. Her role as a Certified Conscious Business Change Agent allows her to help organisations transition towards more mindful, ethical models, particularly startups with big visions and bold ideas. Connecting the Dots (and the People) As a natural networker, Romy thrives on bringing people together, whether it’s clients, collaborators, or communities across the globe. Coordination with Humanity’s Team Switzerland has provided an avenue for her to unite individuals under a shared mission of awareness and transformation. Her work extends beyond borders, always driven by a belief in the power of collective energy. A Story in Every Frame Photography, for Romy, is more than just capturing images — it’s about rediscovering the magic in the world. Each frame tells a story, each click of the shutter honours the beauty of life. It’s this perspective that fuels her mission: to inspire, to connect, and to share. Every project, whether visual or strategic, carries the same thread — an appreciation for the sublime and an invitation for others to join in the dance of creativity. A Path Enriched by Community For Romy, the journey isn’t a solo endeavour. She believes in the richness of shared experience, in the strength of support, and in the generosity of those who uplift one another, as she continues capturing, creating, and connecting. Romy expressed a preference for natural outdoor events, modern architecture, and the cuisine of Ghana and Spain. They also discussed the possibility of stepping into the work of famous artists through virtual reality headsets. The conversation concluded with their final destination being the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, where they would enjoy a meal at a reserved table with a view of the palace. Fantasy Lunch Romy had the opportunity to end her year by having lunch with anyone, living or not, for which she chose her grandmother. Through this imaginative exercise, Romy’s fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey, bridging change, the arts, and human consciousness. - Jacquie Chandler - Destination steward and TEDx Talker.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Jacquie Chandler (Destination steward) and discover her fantasy cultural year. Early Career and Introduction to Geotourism Jacquie Chandler began her professional journey as a Corporate Story Coach for a local sales messaging company. During this time, she attended a tourism conference in South Lake Tahoe, where she was deeply inspired by success stories of destinations that had successfully adopted geotourism principles. This pivotal experience led to her appointment as the Geotourism Liaison for the Lake Tahoe Basin by the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations (NGCSD) in 2007. Founding of Sustainable Tahoe In 2010, leveraging her new role and passion for sustainable tourism, Jacquie Chandler founded Sustainable Tahoe , a Nevada-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to promoting geotourism in the Tahoe Truckee watershed. The organization’s mission is to inspire, enable, and showcase the emergence of geotourism as a sustainable economic driver for the region. Under her leadership, Sustainable Tahoe has facilitated alliances and collaboration models that promote responsible tourism. Jacquie Chandler’s efforts have brought together local businesses, agencies, and indigenous communities, ensuring that members of the Washo and Paiute tribes actively participate in every public event hosted by Sustainable Tahoe. Milestones and Contributions From 2010 to 2014, Jacquie Chandler and a dedicated group of volunteers produced the first Tahoe Stewardship Congress. This initiative was followed by four years of the Tahoe Expo, a weekend of guided ‘fun, meaningful, low-impact’ visitor activities that promote stewardship and sustainable prosperity. These efforts also led to the development of a geotourism curriculum for Sierra Nevada College, which educated students on the importance of destination stewardship. Between 2015 and 2022, Jacquie Chandler continued her work by co-creating a line of Gratitude Products featuring messages of stewardship, launching self-guided Earth Walk adventures, and hosting student events. She also developed a sustainable tourism implementation framework centered around an online and field course, which she presented at various local and state travel, business, and naturalist conferences. Ongoing Initiatives and Advocacy Beyond her administrative and advocacy roles, Jacquie Chandler actively engages in educational initiatives promoting nature-based wellness practices. Her involvement in discussions about rewilding oneself in the EarthGym exemplifies her commitment to holistic environmental stewardship. Sustainable Tahoe continues to expand its outreach through original books, songs, talks, and a forthcoming children’s TV series. Jacquie Chandler remains dedicated to fostering a geotourism economy that aligns with the principles of sustainability, conservation, and cultural heritage preservation. Through Sustainable Tahoe, she continues to lead the charge in redefining how tourism can serve as a tool for ecological and economic prosperity. Chronological Timeline: 2007 – Appointed by NGCSD as the Geotourism Liaison for the Lake Tahoe Basin. 2009 – Partnered with Penelope Curtis to form Geo-Sierra, winning the RFP to create a Geotourism Asset Map for El Dorado County. 2010 – Founded Sustainable Tahoe with local volunteers to facilitate the adoption of a geotourism economy for the Tahoe Truckee watershed. 2010–2014 – Organized the first Tahoe Stewardship Congress and the Tahoe Expo, promoting sustainable, low-impact tourism. 2015–2022 – Co-created stewardship-focused Gratitude Products, launched Earth Walk adventures, developed an online and field course for sustainable tourism, and presented at travel and business conferences. Through her leadership and dedication, Jacquie Chandler continues to inspire a sustainable future for the Lake Tahoe Basin, ensuring that responsible tourism remains at the heart of the region’s economic and environmental strategies. Jacquie Chandler on TEDx: Jacquie Chandler's fantasy cultural year. Guided by founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Jacquie Chandler embarked on an imaginative exploration of her passions—geotourism, destination stewardship, and cultural immersion. A former fashion designer turned National Geographic geotourism liaison, Jacquie has spent 18 years championing sustainable tourism in the Tahoe watershed. Now, she is writing a book on the subject and working on a "millennial forest of consciousness" to reconnect humanity with nature. With a TEDx talk under her belt, she also plans to expand her speaking career. A Global Study in Destination Stewardship Mark proposed an ambitious, fictitious foundation-funded journey for Jacquie: a worldwide study on destination stewardship, ranking countries on their environmental and tourism policies. This project would lead to a TED Talk, a book, a TV series, and a university lecture tour. Jacquie agreed to begin in South Africa’s Earth Lodge before traveling to Chile, Norway, Australia, and beyond, exploring sustainable lodging and the effects of climate change. As part of this journey, she accepted an experimental challenge—to immerse herself exclusively in African music for a year. Cultural Exploration & Time Travel Adventures Their conversation turned playful as they designed Jacquie’s "fantasy cultural year," with Mark wielding a magic wand and time machine. She envisioned experiencing the pagan dances of Orkney Island’s Stennis stones, delving into the Vatican catacombs in search of the original Eucharist recipe, and dining on Ethiopian cuisine. She selected Venice for a digitally enhanced art gallery visit and shared her love for dance as a sport. In London, Mark and Jacquie planned a week of cultural indulgence: a Rolling Stones concert, avant-garde theatre akin to "Liquid Theatre," a Broadway-style musical, the ballet "The Rite of Spring," and a classic film screening, for which Jacquie recommended My Cousin Vinny. Their time-traveling itinerary included witnessing the opening nights of Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story. Art, Music, and Social Change A thought-provoking discussion on the power of disruptive art and music followed. Jacquie drew parallels between Jesus and Malcolm X, reflecting on the role of art in challenging societal norms. She shared her experience as a Bank of America Scholar and emphasised the need for artistic activism. Mark, captivated by her insights, committed to publishing and promoting their conversation. Through this imaginative exercise, Jacquie’s fantasy cultural year emerged as a deeply personal, intellectually stimulating, and adventure-filled journey—bridging geotourism, the arts, and human consciousness.
