Abram Max
Wood sculptor
Don't miss the image of my elephant.
Hi, I’m Abram Max of Beauty Seed Studios and a proud full member of The Arts and Culture Network. Recently, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Mark Walmsley, our network's founder.
During our conversation, we delved into my passion for woodworking, my unique approach to art, and my fantasy of spending a year exploring wood art in Poland. We also shared personal interests and favourite books, and candidly discussed the presence of 'bullshit' in our work.
I shared my journey, from being inspired by local mill owner Rod Jacobs to collaborating with the Association of Violin Makers of America and the Coquille tribe. My approach centres on discovering the inherent beauty in wood rather than merely optimising its output. Through my partnership with Jacobs, I've been fortunate to receive exquisite pieces of figured maple and other hardwoods.
One highlight was showcasing a unique piece of art created from an old hardwood tree that naturally formed an elephant shape. I emphasized the beauty of spalting, a type of mold growth that occurs when a tree dies from the inside out, and how I collaborate with nature to reveal the tree’s essence. Mark was deeply impressed by its striking appearance and story.
We discussed my focus on helping artists develop healthier relationships with their lives and work through mindset coaching. My artwork, which is accessible and reasonably priced, has received positive feedback, including commissions and festival recognitions. I also shared a touching story about surprising my wife with a 300-pound watercolor paper art piece, which moved her to tears.
Our conversation also included imaginative storytelling, starting with my favorite building, the Chrysler Building in New York City. We discussed impactful books, our love for coffee and dogs, and humorous anecdotes about typographical errors and professional mishaps.
I announced my podcast featuring mural painter Jason Barkin and shared my plans for incorporating knowledge from my recent graduation from the Enlisted Mindset Coaching program into workshops and a tabletop role-playing game coaching methodology.
Mark and I discussed creating a profile about my work, to be published on various platforms. I suggested he appear on my podcast, which he agreed to, hinting at some interesting stories to share. I’m excited to continue this journey and collaboration with The Arts and Culture Network.
