Iiro Komulainen is a classical pianist and composer from Finland whose innovative approach to music has titled him as a "Revolutionary Pianist". Iiro blends technical mastery with a vibrant imagination, creating performances that are as unpredictable as they are unforgettable. Whether improvising on a theme suggested by his audience, composing original works, or reinterpreting classics, Iiro turns each note into an evocative journey.


Mark introduced Iiro Komulainen, a pianist from Helsinki, discussing his passion for composing and improvising music. They explored various cultural experiences and planned Iiro's year of studying improvisation in Vienna in the fantasy cultural year game.

He studied at the prestigious Pop & Jazz Conservatory of Helsinki, where he honed his skills in piano performance and composition. He has toured extensively across Finland and internationally, performing in venues ranging from traditional concert halls to unconventional settings like shopping centres and even the rooftop of Raahe's tallest building in winter, accompanied by a drone videographer team.

One of his standout collaborations is PianoBattle, a lively and musically rich concert series performed with fellow pianist Niklas Klaavo. Iiro has also ventured into the intersection of music and technology, incorporating artificial intelligence-generated images and videos into his performances. These concerts have been featured at universities, tech expos, and startup festivals, including the SHIFT Business Festival in 2024. At SHIFT, Iiro mesmerised attendees by improvising music based on corporate slogans and delivering a memorable performance for legendary DJ Darude, including a piano rendition of the iconic track "Sandstorm."

Iiro Komulainen’s fantasy cultural year begins in Vienna, the city of music, where he immerses himself in its rich artistic history.


Seated in a charming café overlooking a vibrant square, he sips Earl Grey tea while reading a biography of Johann Sebastian Bach, finding inspiration in the life of the great composer.


Research in Vienna


Supported by a fictitious wealthy Austrian family foundation, Iiro embarks on a year-long research project to explore the role of improvisation in classical music. Diving into Vienna’s storied musical landscape, he works alongside young musicians, studies at conservatoires, and performs in historic venues. This journey sheds light on the lost art of classical improvisation and how it contrasts with jazz improvisation, sparking a renaissance of spontaneity in classical music performance.


Musical Adventures


Iiro’s improvisational prowess takes centre stage during this year, as he crafts on-the-spot compositions from audience suggestions. From Donald Trump-inspired themes to musical portrayals of "flies and Hungary," his creativity knows no bounds. Iiro’s unique ability to create tonal and atonal works captivates audiences across Europe, Asia, and North America during his lecture tours, concerts, and Ted Talks.


Inspirational Performances


In Vienna, Iiro attends a moving ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet, which deepens his appreciation for storytelling through music and movement. He also experiences Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, a piece close to his heart, performed in the same venue where Claudio Abbado once made an unforgettable impression on Simon Rattle.

Iiro savours the best of Austrian cuisine, with schnitzels as a favourite dish, shared during dinners with fellow artists and musicians. These meals foster vibrant cultural exchanges, blending his love for food, music, and community.
