Meet Max Hass (Entertainment law guru, bassist & songwriter)
Max Hass isn’t your average attorney; he’s a dynamic mix of intellectual property powerhouse, entertainment law guru, and bassist-songwriter with a knack for turning complex legal jargon into plain English.
As a founding partner at Holon Law Partners, Max brings his encyclopaedic knowledge of copyright, trademark, and contracts to creators of all kinds—be they musicians, filmmakers, or entrepreneurs looking to protect their brands and ideas.
Mark and Max engaged in one of Mark's delightful conversational interviews, discussing Max's experiences and creating his fantasy cultural year.
Max's path to the courtroom began on the stage. From his teenage years in Albany, where he graduated as valedictorian of Albany Academy, Max’s love for music became the driving rhythm of his life.
This passion took him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied cognitive science (cum laude, no less!) with a minor in jazz music. Here, he explored the intersection of the mind, decision-making, and music, spending hours honing his craft as both a thinker and a performer.
The music didn’t stop when Max shifted gears to law school. At Tulane University Law School, he balanced his studies in intellectual property and entertainment law with gigs in the vibrant New Orleans music scene. He played bass for bands like the Maggie Belle Band and The Crooked Vines, even gracing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival stage. By night, he grooved with his bass; by day, he delved into copyright doctrines and civil litigation.
After earning his J.D., cum laude, Max took his talents to the legal field, sharpening his skills across roles at firms like Egenberg Trial Lawyers and his own venture, Hass Law LLC.
There, he built a reputation for fiercely advocating for artists, tackling everything from music clearance to drafting licensing agreements. He even dabbled in patent commercialisation during his time at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center, showing he wasn’t afraid to push boundaries—whether in biotechnology or funk grooves.
In 2023, Max co-founded Holon Law Partners, a firm rooted in collaboration and creativity. As part of Holon’s IP and Entertainment Practice Group, he helps musicians navigate large-scale deals and filmmakers protect their works. His work extends beyond the courtroom—he’s a dedicated educator, hosting workshops nationwide on copyright, contracts, and trademark fundamentals.
When Max isn’t lawyering or teaching, he’s strumming his bass in Denver, where he performs with Half Maxx, Danette Hollowell & the Good Guys, and Ellie and the Alibis. A true advocate for artists, Max understands the intricacies of the entertainment industry because he’s lived it himself.
Max Hass isn’t just an attorney; he’s a bridge between creativity and legality, a champion of creators’ rights, and proof that you really can blend law and rock-and-roll.

Iconic Spaces: 30 Rockefeller Place
Reflecting on his time at 30 Rockefeller Place, Max shared memories of the summer of 2014, working in this iconic New York building. Its art deco design, stunning artwork, and vibrant cultural role left a lasting impression. Max and Mark imagined a scene at the Rockefeller Plaza ice rink, pondering its transformation into a bustling hub of summer concerts.
Entertainment Law in Rio: Research and Culture
Mark proposed a research trip to Rio de Janeiro, funded by a New York foundation, to study entertainment law in Brazil. Max, intrigued by Brazil’s rich cultural landscape, envisioned diving into its music scene, exploring Samba during Carnival, and learning from young musicians. They joked about adopting a single genre for a year and considered how such experiences could inform Max’s work back home.
Musical Roots and Aspirations
Max’s love for music is a central part of his identity. Inspired by bass legends like Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorius, Max cherishes the connections between his musical and legal careers. He described meeting Victor Wooten and the impact of his writing, sharing his dream of seeing him perform live. From New Orleans jazz to the dynamic sounds of Rio, Max’s passion for music fuels his creativity.
Exploring Art and Theatre in Rio
Art and performance are also close to Max’s heart. He and Mark envisioned a week in Rio attending rock concerts, theatre productions, operas, and more. Max expressed a desire to hear an opera sung in Portuguese and explore immersive art experiences, including virtual reality renditions of Monet and Cezanne’s masterpieces.
Cultural Conversations and Quick-Fire Fun
In their lighter moments, Max and Mark shared their favourite books and beverages, including Max’s appreciation for Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums and his preference for non-alcoholic drinks. A quick-fire Q&A revealed Max’s love for Mozart, motorcycles, dark chocolate, and history, alongside his penchant for a tidy desk and an early start to the day.
Music for the Ages
When asked which song he’d leave on the moon, Max chose Prince’s "I Feel for You," a timeless track representing his eclectic musical tastes. Mark suggested a TV show documenting Max’s travels through Brazil, recording with local musicians and celebrating their creative stories.
