Meet Pamela Roberts Creative Producer, Author, Business Coach and founder of Black Oxford.
In this interview, Mark invited Pamela to create her own fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions where there are no wrong answers. Enjoy her journey below.
Pamela Roberts has worn many hats across a remarkable career – and continues to weave them together in ways that inspire and empower others.
A former television producer and director, she has created documentaries and cultural projects that bring overlooked stories to light. She is also a published author of two non-fiction books and a business coach who helps creative entrepreneurs start, thrive, and scale their ventures.
Pamela is the founder and director of Black Oxford: Untold Stories, an online platform dedicated to celebrating the University of Oxford’s Black scholars from the early 20th century to the present day.
Through writing, lectures, and cultural projects – including the first Black heritage guided bus tour of Oxford, launched in partnership with Oxford City Sightseeing – she has opened new pathways for audiences to connect with history and identity.
Her passion for history, storytelling, and entrepreneurship sits at the heart of everything she does, making her an invaluable voice within the Arts and Culture Network.
Pamela's Fantasy Cultural Year ... with a magic wand and time machine at hand.
As part of her welcome into the Arts and Culture Network, Pamela joined Mark Walmsley for a Fantasy Cultural Year interview – a playful yet revealing conversation that explored her inspirations, tastes, and cultural imagination.
Pamela chose the Old Bailey in London as her favourite building, recalling her work producing a documentary about the first Black barrister, Christian Frederick Cole. From there, she imagined enjoying a mojito at a pavement café nearby with her favourite book, Succeeding Against the Odds by John H. Johnson – a “business bible” that has guided and inspired her throughout her career.
Her journey took her across the globe: to Bridgetown, Barbados, where she has lectured on Caribbean history; to Venice, to cheer on Lewis Hamilton at the Italian Grand Prix; and to Vienna, where she would step into the vibrant art of African American painter Annie Lee via a virtual reality gallery. Along the way, Pamela filled her itinerary with live music, theatre, and cinema – from Earth, Wind & Fire in their prime to a new F1 film at the IMAX.
In a whimsical twist, she was offered a dream project by a wealthy foundation: a year-long, first-class tour of the world to create a league table of support for creative entrepreneurs, accompanied by a book deal, a TV crew, and even a TED Talk at the end of the journey.
The conversation closed with a lively “This or That” game – Pamela choosing sparkle over stillness, salsa over reggae, and history over science – giving a glimpse into her quick wit and wide-ranging curiosity.
