Meet Red Benbow.

In this interview, Mark invited Red Benbow to create his own fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions where there are no wrong answers. Enjoy his journey below.

Red Benbow is an emerging author and poet whose work has begun carving out a corner in contemporary literature. His writing thrives at the intersection of emotional honesty and wry humour, offering readers stories that are as reflective as they are unexpectedly entertaining.

Known for his thoughtful exploration of resilience, transformation, and the many shapes the human spirit can take, Red Benbow approaches each project with an open curiosity and a sharp eye for detail.

Beginning his writing career later in life, Red often describes the shift as a ‘creative ambush’ — one he happily surrendered to.

His debut novel, The Tre, quickly caught the attention of readers drawn to its heartfelt storytelling and memorable characters. The companion novel, The Tre: The Lucille Baynes Story, expanded his fictional world while demonstrating his instinct for character‑driven narrative.

Beyond fiction, Red has developed a strong following for his poetry, which blends rhythm, candour, and introspective depth.

His poems often sit at the crossroads of personal experience and universal emotion, resonating with audiences who appreciate writing that feels both grounded and unafraid of vulnerability.

Red is currently working on My Life, My Journey, My 28 Years with a Narcissist, a project that further showcases his versatility and willingness to approach difficult subjects with clarity and creative courage. He balances this with additional works across multiple genres.

Born in Winston‑Salem and now residing in Charlotte, NC, Red continues to share his growing body of work with an engaged, expanding readership. His blend of humour, heart, and honest reflection makes him a welcome contemporary voice.

Red's Fantasy Cultural Year ... with a magic wand and time machine to hand.

In his fantasy cultural year, Red chooses Pittsburgh over New Orleans to visit first—both cities feel spiritually alive to him. Mark imagines Red on a first-class flight being challenged to listen to just one genre for a year. Red picks the blues immediately: raw, real, and rich in life stories. When he lands in Pittsburgh, a group of young creatives welcome him and offer to show him around.

A Whirlwind of Ballet, Vegan Food, Seattle & Sport

Their day plans? A ballet performance followed by a vegan dinner. Then they’re off to Seattle, where Red fancies catching an American football game. Next stop: London—not for the culture, surprisingly, but for a personal reason Red keeps close to the chest.

London: Two Cities & a Streetwise Guide

Red wants to dig into London’s history beyond the glossy financial district.Mark explains London’s “two-city” quirk: the City of London (the tiny financial heart) and Westminster. He recalls a homeless man who once became his informal tour guide, pointing out that the City technically has no “roads” at all—only streets, alleys and squares.

A Virtual Week of Art, Music & Theatre

They map out a digital arts week: a Van Gogh virtual gallery, historic concerts, theatre, musicals, opera, and movies. Red shares how he fell in love with Queen thanks to MTV in the ’80s.

A Cultural Week in London

The London itinerary gets packed fast: Shakespeare at the Globe (they choose Measure for Measure), The Sound of Music on stage, and La Bohème—with Mark reminiscing about Pavarotti’s legendary performance. They finish the week with a cinema trip, with Red choosing the film.

Red’s Fantasy Cultural Year

Red lights up talking about Smokey and the Bandit and its stars. Then Mark unveils the “fantasy cultural year”: a deep dive into study, interviews, and a creative pipeline leading to a TED Talk, films, a TV series, a book, and global lectures. Red is asked which historical figure he’d invite to a vegan lunch in London. His pick? Winston Churchill—for his leadership and ability to see beyond the immediate.
