Meet Robert Walker.

In this interview, Mark created Robert Walker's fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions to which there were no wrong answers.
Mark had a magic wand and a time machine at his disposal, so expect some surprises, laughs, anecdotes and conversational detours.

Some artists paint what they see. Robert Walker paints the stories that have shaped civilisation.

Working primarily in oils, Robert creates richly imaginative paintings inspired by mythology, folklore and the timeless narratives that continue to influence human culture.

His work explores the enduring power of ancient stories, inviting viewers to rediscover familiar legends through a distinctly contemporary artistic voice.

For Robert, mythology is far more than history. It is a living language. Whether drawing inspiration from Greek mythology, Roman civilisation or the great archetypal stories that have travelled across continents for thousands of years, his paintings reveal how these narratives continue to speak to modern audiences.

His fascination with mythology began early and has remained a constant thread throughout his artistic life. Over the years he has developed a distinctive visual style that combines meticulous craftsmanship with vivid colour, expressive composition and a strong sense of narrative.

Each painting encourages viewers to look beyond the surface, discovering new meanings and personal interpretations hidden within familiar myths.

Alongside his creative practice, Robert is passionate about making art accessible, believing that storytelling remains one of humanity's most powerful ways of understanding ourselves and the world around us.

His work reminds us that myths never truly disappear. They simply find new audiences.

Every Arts and Culture Network member is invited to embark on a Fantasy Cultural Year—an imaginary journey inspired by their passions, creativity and curiosity.

For artist Robert Walker, the adventure becomes a celebration of classical art, contemporary painting and the enduring relevance of mythology.

It begins in Rome.

As evening approaches, Robert sits outside a café overlooking the magnificent Pantheon. On the table beside him rests a perfectly chilled margarita, a well-thumbed copy of Stephen King's Fairy Tale and the gentle music of Suffolk singer-songwriter Hannah Scott drifting through his headphones.

Looking across one of the greatest surviving buildings of the ancient world, Robert reflects on the extraordinary history contained within its walls. The scars of two thousand years have only added to its beauty.

Then comes an unexpected invitation ...

A distinguished Roman family foundation has spent years championing classical art and believes Robert's colourful, contemporary reinterpretations of mythology could introduce a new generation to these timeless stories. They commission a major international touring exhibition, complete with first-class travel, a television documentary, a beautifully illustrated coffee-table book, a TED Talk and a global university lecture tour.

The opening exhibition takes place in Tokyo, where young artists welcome Robert and his work with enormous enthusiasm. That evening they introduce him to an avant-garde ballet inspired by the bold visual style of contemporary European choreography before sharing a wonderfully simple Italian meal—spaghetti with olive oil and garlic.

From Tokyo the exhibition travels to New York.

There, Robert steps away from the gallery for one unforgettable sporting moment, watching Roger Bannister become the first person to run the four-minute mile—a reminder that creativity and human achievement often begin with believing something impossible can be done.

The tour finally returns to London for a week of unforgettable cultural experiences.

Using a little artistic licence—and a time machine—Robert revisits Paul McCartney and Wings in concert, while also finally experiencing the Queen performance he always wished he'd seen.

A visit to Shakespeare's Globe follows, where Hamlet is performed in surroundings that bring fresh life to one of literature's greatest works.

The week concludes with an evening at the cinema, celebrating the power of visual storytelling that has always inspired Robert's own artistic imagination.

For his Fantasy Lunch, Robert chooses artist Roberto Ferri.

As the year comes to an end, one truth becomes unmistakably clear. The stories may be ancient. But every generation needs artists to tell them again.
