I am Margaret Wesseling, a playwright, performer, and translator based in Athens. In my interview with Mark, I shared my vision for a fantasy cultural year, filled with surprises, anecdotes, and laughter.
Early Life and Education
My academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, where I graduated summa cum laude. I then pursued a Master of Arts degree from Michigan State University. My passion for medieval studies led me to the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, where I studied medieval textuality on a Fulbright grant.
Training and Early Career
My early career included extensive training in theatrical performance and improvisation in Los Angeles from 1995 to 1997. I further honed my skills in theatrical writing by attending seminars in Athens starting in 2015. During this period, I participated in numerous dramatic readings and performances in Boston, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Athens.
Writing and Performance
I have made significant contributions to theater and literature, writing nine plays and two books of poetry, along with numerous articles in both Greek and English. My works often explore themes of change and movement, reflecting my interest in how individuals and societies transform across political, economic, and personal borders.
Notable Works and Collaborations
Voices of our Ancestors (1998): This play was a collaborative project I produced and directed in Los Angeles with formerly homeless individuals at Glaxa Studios.
Sparrow on the Housetop (2018-2019): Published by Egokeros in November 2019, it was performed in Greek at the Athens Suitcase Festival in September 2018, and at Beep Theatre in Athens from November to December 2019.
Something Missing (2022): Performed at K.O.T.E.S. Theater in Athens in the spring of 2022 and at Fournos Theater in the fall of 2022. It was also produced as a radio play by the Willits Community Theatre and Performing Arts Center in California in June 2022.
The Crack (2023): Produced and performed with Joƫlle Montech in Athens in June 2023 and on Aegina in August 2023.
I've also collaborated with the writer's group Scene+, alongside dramaturge Andreas Flourakis, to perform several textual performances of my writings.

Current Projects and Interests
I continue to engage with my audience through various platforms. Currently, I'm working on translating my English-language plays for Greek audiences and exploring a series of animal-centric monologues that delve into the human-animal divide. I have a keen interest in non-verbal art forms such as modern dance, visual art, and architecture, particularly medieval structures like Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire, England.
Future Aspirations
My future plans include cultural travels, especially exploring the arts and culture of the south of France. I also look forward to engaging in new projects that bridge cultural and linguistic divides, continuing to inspire and connect with audiences worldwide.
Personal Reflections
My work is deeply influenced by my belief in the inevitability of change and movement. I see these as fundamental aspects of human experience, often driven by our actions and circumstances. Through my art, I seek to capture and convey the dynamic nature of life, encouraging my audience to embrace change and the possibilities it brings.
