Meet John Deery.
In this interview, Mark invited John Deery to create his own fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions where there are no wrong answers. Enjoy his journey below.
If storytelling is power, then John Deery has spent more than 25 years quietly building power stations.
John Deery is an award-winning British director, producer and screenwriter, and the Founder of The Public Speaking Course, a highly rated communication training company helping individuals and global brands overcome the fear of speaking in public.
He is also the Owner and Managing Director of Joejack Entertainment, a London-based film and television production company developing compelling projects across drama, comedy and thriller.
John Deery’s film career includes writing, producing and directing the critically acclaimed, award-winning feature film Conspiracy of Silence, available on Amazon Prime.
The film stars Academy Award-winner Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids). Set in Ireland and inspired by real events, the film explores celibacy in the Catholic Church with intelligence, humanity and courage.
As Executive Producer and co-creator of the hit BBC children’s animated series Underground Ernie, John Deery demonstrated his range — moving seamlessly from controversial adult drama to beloved children’s television. The series became a staple of BBC children’s programming and remains part of his proud creative legacy.
Through Joejack Entertainment, John Deery continues to develop a slate of diverse projects, including a powerful feature set in the Middle East about three boys of different faiths united by their love of football — a timely story of friendship and reconciliation. As an independent filmmaker, he actively seeks development and production finance to bring meaningful stories to the screen.
However, John's storytelling expertise is now delivered primarily through his public speaking training company ThePublicSpeakingCourse.com, founded in 2020.
Designed as a unique one-day intensive course, it helps professionals confidently stand up and speak to audiences of any size. The programme has grown to include one and two-day courses, webinars and masterclasses across London, Dublin and Cork.
Rated 5-Star “Excellent” on Trustpilot, John has worked with organisations including Shell, HSBC, KPMG, Amazon, Apple, easyJet, the BBC, J.P. Morgan, PwC, Samsung, the British Red Cross, HM Land Registry, the Metropolitan Police and many more.
John Deery’s expertise spans directing, producing, screenwriting, project development, keynote speaking, mentoring and corporate communication coaching. Whether he’s guiding a film cast or a boardroom full of nervous executives, his mission is the same: clear communication changes lives — and businesses.
In short, John Deery doesn’t just tell stories — he helps others find their voice.
John's Fantasy Cultural Year ... with a magic wand and time machine to hand.
Mark introduced the idea of a “ fantasy cultural year” - a way to get to know each new full member that's far more spontaneous than a traditional interview — allowing imagination, travel, culture and John’s creative vision to collide.
They begin by picturing a trip to Jerusalem, setting the tone for a year of global exploration, culture, and big ideas. Along the way, John shares a few personal favourites that ground him:
A proper cup of builder’s tea
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
The Beatles’ “Let It Be”
The Big Hypothetical: A World Lecture Tour
John is offered a year-long global tour, giving lectures on effective communication to reduce conflict around the world.
Where does he start? Washington, D.C. — because of its global political importance.
Tour Preferences: Food, Music & Movement
John’s cultural tastes come through clearly:
🎵 Classical music is his go-to.
👞 He loves tap dancing, especially Irish dance.
🍜 For dinner? Thai cuisine — he’s vegetarian and particularly fond of Thai food.
Fantasy Travel Stops
The itinerary expands to include:
New York
Berlin (which John is especially keen to visit for its historical significance)
A digitally enhanced art gallery
A virtual reality experience of David Bowie’s art and music
They also discover John is a football man — firmly backing Liverpool.
A week of entertainment
The pair imagine spending a week in London, packed with culture:
Concerts - The Beatles live
Theatre - Shakespeare plays
A Broadway musical - specifically 42nd Street
Opera - Puccini’s Tosca at the Royal Opera House.
And in Las Vegas, at the Sphere, he’d watch:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Terminator 2
🍽 Hero Lunch
During the journey, John attends Hero Lunch, where he can invite anyone - living or not - for a 2 hour leisurely lunch. He chooses Jesus — focusing specifically on the historical figure, rather than the religious dimension.
