Interview Summary: Lee Lam and Mark Walmsley
Entrepreneurship, Creativity, and Resource Gaps
In a recent interview with Mark Walmsley at The Arts and Culture Network, Lee Lam shared insights on the challenges and opportunities in entrepreneurship, particularly within the creative sectors.
Emphasising the importance of self-expression and commercial success in entrepreneurship, Lee highlighted the high failure rate of startups, often due to resource gaps in finances and social connections. Both agreed on the necessity of the right approach, commercial thinking, and connections for achieving success. They also delved into the unique funding challenges prevalent in the arts and culture world.
Lee's Interests and Tate Modern Scenarios
Mark and Lee explored Lee's personal interests and preferences through the creation of Lee's fantasy cultural year starting at Lee's favourite building, the Tate Modern. Seated at an outdoor café overlooking the turbine room, Lee imagined having a significant book by his side, choosing "The Tenant at Wildfeld Hall" as one that deeply impacted his life. When asked about her beverage of choice, Lee selected a cappuccino, underscoring her reliance on coffee.
Sponsored Study Trip and Music Experiment
Mark revealed that a fictitious wealthy London family had offered to sponsor a year-long study trip for Lee to cultivate business skills in the creative sector. Lee selected Brazil, specifically Rio de Janeiro, for its vibrant culture and entrepreneurial opportunities. Mark agreed, noting Brazil's deep-rooted arts and culture scene. They also discussed a music experiment where Lee would listen exclusively to one genre for a year, with Lee opting for ambient electronic music.
Fantasy Experience in Rio with Riverdance
Mark and Lee envisioned her fantasy cultural year in Rio, starting with a limo ride to a loft overlooking the Christ the Redeemer statue. They planned a two-hour dance performance, where Lee chose Irish dancing, specifically Riverdance, due to its captivating blend of music and dance. Mark shared his missed investment opportunity with Riverdance and its subsequent popularity. They concluded this fantasy experience with an Argentinian steak dinner, a favourite cuisine of Lee's.
Discussing Immersive Art Gallery and Painting
Their conversation continued with an exploration of an immersive art gallery in Rio, utilising projection and virtual reality to create engaging experiences. Lee fondly recalled a painting from the Scottish Museum of Modern Art, depicting a figure joyfully leaping into the sky, though she couldn't identify the artist. Mark suggested they might uncover more about this painting during Lee's time in Rio.
Art Preferences and Hero Day Discussion
Lee shared her preferences for various art forms, including plays, musicals, and opera, naming "An Inspector Calls" and "Joseph" as her favourite shows, and "La Traviata" as her preferred opera.
Mark introduced the concept of "Hero Day," where one can invite any individual, living or dead, to a leisurely lunch in Rio. Lee chose to invite her mentor, Maya, who significantly influenced her interest in Black American culture.
The interview concluded with Lee expressing her excitement for upcoming events and Mark thanking her for the engaging discussion.
