Meet Samanta Herrero ... and Verone.

In this interview, Samanta Herrero welcomes us into the artistic world of her mother, Verone and shares her mission to preserve and promote her artistic legacy.

A daughter's mission to bring the extraordinary work of Swiss painter Verone (1925–2006) back into the light.

Art has the power to transcend generations, preserve memories and invite us into worlds beyond our own. For Samanta Herrero, that power is deeply personal.

Samanta is dedicated to preserving and promoting the artistic legacy of her mother, Verone, a Swiss painter whose remarkable body of work encompasses dreamlike landscapes, mythology, portraiture, architecture and the mysteries of human imagination.

In conversation with Mark Walmsley, founder of the Arts and Culture Network, Samanta shares the story of her mother's creative life, the inspiration behind her paintings and her own determination to ensure that Verone's work is rediscovered and appreciated by new generations.

Verone: An Invitation to Dream

Born in 1925, Verone spent part of her childhood in Egypt before returning to Europe. Her early experiences, including a passion for the mountains and the natural world, helped shape an artistic imagination that would find expression across decades of painting.

She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and developed her artistic practice through workshops associated with celebrated artists including Yves Brayer, Henri Goetz and André Lhote.

Her work defies easy categorisation. Moving between figurative painting, imaginative compositions and atmospheric landscapes, Verone created paintings that encourage viewers to look beyond the immediately visible.

Dreams, movement, mythology, music and emotion recur throughout her work, often bringing together apparently unrelated elements in compositions that feel simultaneously familiar and otherworldly.

As Samanta observes: "Art is made to make you dream."

It is a sentiment that captures much of what makes Verone's paintings so compelling.

An International Artistic Career

Verone enjoyed an active international artistic career, exhibiting her work and receiving recognition across Europe.

Her paintings were represented at the Salon Comparaisons in Paris in 1976, while Premier récital was exhibited at the Musée de l'Athénée in Geneva in 1981.

Her artistic achievements included distinctions at international exhibitions in Rome and Monaco during the 1970s.

Verone also operated an art gallery in Switzerland, where, according to Samanta, she welcomed artists including Salvador Dalí.

Throughout her career, she continued to experiment with subjects and techniques, creating an extensive collection of paintings that reveal both technical accomplishment and an unusually fertile imagination.

Among her notable works are Seul dans la tourmente, L'Atlantide, Lady Godiva, Soleil de mon soleil, San Marco sous la pluie, Aurore en Camargue and Sous l'aile de Pégase.

Each offers a different perspective on her artistic world, from dramatic encounters between humanity and nature to contemplative landscapes and fantastical visions.

A Daughter's Mission

Following Verone's death in 2006, Samanta became increasingly concerned that her mother's artistic achievements and extensive collection of paintings might fade from public awareness.

Rather than allowing that legacy to remain hidden, she has committed herself to bringing the work back into galleries, exhibitions and conversations about art.

Her mission is not simply to preserve a collection. It is to restore visibility to an artist whose work, she believes, still has much to offer contemporary audiences.

For Samanta, each painting carries something of her mother's imagination, personality and creative spirit.

Through exhibitions, personal introductions and conversations with people across the arts, she hopes to reconnect Verone's work with audiences who may never previously have encountered it.

A significant step in this journey was an exhibition at the Chapelle des Cordeliers in Crest, France, in September 2026, where visitors had the opportunity to discover Verone's paintings.

Creating New Opportunities for Verone's Art

Samanta is now seeking connections with galleries, curators, collectors, cultural organisations and individuals interested in discovering and exhibiting Verone's work.

Original paintings are available for exhibition, and opportunities to produce prints can also be explored.

Although particularly interested in opportunities in France, including the South of France, Samanta welcomes conversations with people and organisations internationally.

Her ambition is to establish a renewed and lasting appreciation of Verone's artistic contribution, allowing the paintings to be experienced not merely as historical objects but as living works capable of inspiring fresh interpretations and emotional connections.

Bringing Art Back Into the Light

There is something especially moving about a daughter championing her mother's creative achievements.

For Samanta, this journey combines family history, artistic appreciation and a belief that remarkable work deserves to be seen.

Verone's paintings offer an invitation to explore unfamiliar worlds, question appearances and rediscover the importance of imagination.

Through her involvement with the Arts and Culture Network, Samanta hopes to connect with people who can help bring that invitation to a wider audience.

Because an artist's legacy lives not only in the paintings they leave behind, but in the people who continue to discover, experience and share them.
