Meet Jane Hickey.

Jane Hickey is a dedicated nutritional therapist specialising in the health and wellbeing of instrumental musicians through personalised food, supplement, and lifestyle programs.

As a valued full member of The Arts and Culture Network, Jane is a regular participant in our networking meetings both online and offline.

In our interview, we explored Jane's fantasy cultural year, filled with laughs, anecdotes, and intriguing conversational detours.

Jane's approach, grounded in nutritional science, involves comprehensive assessments to create tailored plans that help musicians optimise their health and achieve their performance goals.

Recognising the crucial role of nutrition in overall health, Jane develops plans that not only aid in recovering from specific health conditions but also take a proactive preventive stance.

Much like athletes, musicians face unique health challenges, including musculoskeletal and mental health issues. Jane’s programs are designed to mitigate these risks through informed food and lifestyle choices, supporting both physical and mental health.

Jane begins with a detailed assessment of her clients' health and a thorough discussion about their wellbeing goals during an initial consultation. This process may include relevant functional testing, such as a DNALife gene profile, to gain deeper insights.

Her one-on-one programs offer personalised recommendations for food, supplements, and lifestyle adjustments, aiming for gradual improvements toward optimal wellness and music performance. Regular check-ins, complemented by health and wellbeing coaching and optional tools like the FirstBeat monitor to measure stress responses and recovery, ensure ongoing support and progress.

As a BANT-registered Nutritional Therapist with an Advanced Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Coaching from the IAFPD, Jane has also trained with DNALife to enhance her expertise in Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics. Her extensive knowledge of the physical, mental, and lifestyle demands of music performance, coupled with insights from sports nutrition, enables her to support musicians at all stages of their careers.

Jane is committed to understanding her clients' personal stories, motivations, and goals, crafting programs that nourish their wellbeing through informed food and lifestyle choices. She is dedicated to guiding musicians on their journey to achieve their music performance goals, ensuring they have the nutritional foundation to perform at their best.

Interview Summary: Jane Hickey and Mark Walmsley

Jane Hickey - Nutritional therapist for musicians.

Mark Walmsley, founder of the Arts and Culture Network, introduced Jane Hickey, a full member passionate about natural, environmentally grown food and nutrition.

Jane's interest in nutrition was rooted in her early life in East Africa. She recently relocated and is eager to explore new culinary experiences.

Nutrition in the Performing Arts

Jane emphasised the often-overlooked importance of proper nutrition in the performing arts, comparing the physical demands of musicians to those of athletes.

Mark, a percussionist, shared his experiences with unhealthy food choices post-performance and went on to create Janes' fantasy culturtal year.

Favourite Locations

When asked about her favourite building, Jane mentioned her love for the south bank of the River Thames in London, particularly the GLC building. Mark imaginatively placed her in this location, envisioning her enjoying the view of the river and the London Eye.

Favourite Books and Drinks

Jane expressed her desire to reread 'The Magus' by John Fowles, describing it as a historical romp. Mark agreed and suggested it would make a great movie. Jane chose a tequila sunrise as her drink, which Mark admired for its visual appeal.

Year-Long Study on Musicians' Nutrition

In Mark's interview highlight, Jane was commissioned by a fictitious London-based family foundation to conduct a year-long study on musicians' nutrition in Nairobi, Kenya. She plans to explore traditional Kenyan diets and music, focusing on percussion. Her findings will be shared through a book and a TV show.

Luxury Trip Itinerary

Mark and Jane discussed a luxurious trip featuring a helicopter ride, a dance performance, dinner at a Michelin-starred Italian restaurant, a sporting event, and a visit to a new gallery. Jane preferred a ballet performance of Swan Lake, Italian cuisine, Olympic diving, and an immersive Kandinsky art experience.

Anecdote about Valuable Art

Mark shared a story about a woman living next to the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square. Her father, an art collector, donated his collection to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. She owns valuable Chagall paintings, adding a touch of art history to the conversation.

Entertainment Plans for Five Nights

Jane and Mark planned five nights of entertainment:

  1. Pop/Rock Concert: Led Zeppelin

  2. Play: Romeo and Juliet

  3. Musical: Billy Elliot

  4. Opera: Bluebeard's Castle by Béla Bartók

  5. Movie: Dirty Dancing on the big screen

Hero Day and Rift Valley

For "Hero Day," Jane chose diver Tom Daley, explorer Weston Price, and composer Clara Schumann. They also discussed Jane's interest in visiting the Rift Valley in Nairobi, contrasting it with Mark's experience in Barbados.

Upcoming Events

Mark encouraged Jane to connect with others interested in the impact of nutrition on musical performance. They discussed Jane's attendance at future events.
