Meet Katie Edwards, a life of illustrating, art and design

Katie Edwards is a visual artist, illustrator, and graphic designer with a flair for bold, personality-driven work that turns heads and tells stories. With over two decades of experience in the creative industry, she has carved out a distinctive niche combining her love of music, live events, and visual storytelling into vibrant, human-centred design.

Born in Essex and raised on doodles, Katie began her professional journey in the print and sign industry—where practicality met precision and she learned how to make design not just look good, but actually work. Over 16 years in that world taught her everything from pre-press wizardry to making sure a design holds up on a billboard in the rain. It’s this practical know-how, grounded in real-world application, that still underpins her approach today.

In 2020, when the pandemic shuffled the creative deck and redundancy came knocking, Katie decided to stop waiting for briefs and start writing her own. Thus, Katie Edwards Design was born.

Since then, she’s built a growing portfolio of work that includes brand identities, murals, album artwork, merchandise, posters, digital content, and illustration commissions. Her unique style fuses hand-drawn elements, custom typography, and occasional motion graphics—always infused with energy, heart, and a healthy dose of humour.

Katie is especially passionate about working with musicians, independent brands, and events—those who want to stand out, not blend in. She believes visuals should have soul, design should have impact, and creativity should never take itself too seriously.

Whether collaborating with a band on their next release or crafting a visual identity for a grassroots festival, Katie brings authenticity, insight, and just enough cheek to make every project feel like a party with a purpose.

She’s the designer people call when they want their audience to look—and feel—something real.

Katie Edwards' Fantasy Cultural Year

With a magic wand in one hand, a time machine warmed up, and a Star Trek transporter on standby, Mark sat down with Katie Edwards to imagine her dream cultural year. You can watch the conversation in full above— on YouTube or Spotify or SoundCloud.

What followed was a creative, witty, and globe-trotting journey across art, murals and colour.

1. Balancing Work, Family & Passion Projects

Katie and Mark began their conversation by exploring how life, work, and passion can intersect.

Katie, a mother of two young children, shared her adaptable approach to work—balancing each day’s needs while keeping family at the forefront. She emphasised the importance of following one’s passion and not being afraid to try something new.

Mark, a grandfather, echoed her thoughts, stressing the value of quality time with family and having no regrets about life’s choices. The pair also reminisced about an earlier conversation, when Katie had impressed Mark with her hand-painted wooden fire surround—praised for its intricacy and creative flair.

2. Katie’s Designs & the Fantasy Cultural Year

The conversation turned toward Katie’s artistic journey and Instagram account, where she shares vibrant, imaginative works.

Mark singled out a favourite piece—a maximalist design with a tiger and hidden bugs—created by layering paint. He admired Katie’s gift for transforming everyday objects into bold, striking artworks.

Together, they dreamed up a fantasy cultural year for Katie, beginning with her in Peru, near an ancient temple. Katie lit up at the idea, expressing her fascination with ancient architecture and historic places. They also discussed a book she was reading, Caps Lock, which explores design and capitalism. Mark then proposed a whimsical scenario: Katie travelling the world, painting for a Peruvian family foundation—with Peru as her starting point.

3. An Artistic Journey Through Time & Space

Mark and Katie ventured into the fantastical, armed with a magic wand, time machine, and Star Trek transporter.

Katie began in Peru, painting a mural at an ancient monument, before heading to Greece to create more murals. In Santorini, she connected with young local artists, attended a street dance performance, and enjoyed a Greek dinner.

Their journey took a historical turn, as they time-travelled to watch the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” boxing match featuring Muhammad Ali. The adventure concluded in Amsterdam, at a new digitally enhanced art gallery, where Katie wished to step inside one of Noel Fielding’s paintings.

4. Colour, Culture & Concerts

Katie and Mark bonded over their shared love of colour-rich artworks, including those by Noel Fielding.

They planned an imaginative cultural week in London—complete with a historic pop or rock concert, a West End or Broadway musical, a theatre play, the opera, and a movie night. Katie chose Nirvana and Queen as her dream concerts, while Mark named Dream Theater as a personal favourite.

For film night, Katie suggested a recent Sky movie involving time travel, while Mark picked Ghostbusters. When prompted to choose a cultural icon for a lunch date, Katie selected Grayson Perry. The chat wrapped up with a fun “This or That” game.

5. Revealing Preferences: This or That with Katie

Mark led Katie through a rapid-fire round of “This or That,” touching on everything from food and tech to entertainment and lifestyle.

Katie’s choices offered glimpses into her personality—like her preference for PCs over Macs, which Mark noted was uncommon for a designer. The game revealed playful contrasts and helped paint a fuller picture of Katie’s tastes and quirks.
