Meet Mark Pemberton OBE.
Mark Pemberton OBE and I met on ZOOM recently and I curated his fantasy cultural year from the answers to 10 questions. Watch it above.
Mark is a distinguished arts consultant renowned for his expertise in strategy, advocacy, research, and solutions for arts organisations. With an extensive leadership background spanning over 15 years in the orchestral and theatre sectors, Mark has significantly influenced the cultural landscape.
Formerly the Chief Executive of the Association of British Orchestras, Mark's impactful tenure saw him successfully navigate orchestras through the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit, thanks to negotiations with the UK Government.
His advocacy efforts resulted in the implementation of Orchestra Tax Relief and the inclusion of orchestral musicians on the Home Office Shortage Occupation List. Additionally, Mark played a crucial role in establishing the All Party Parliamentary Group on Classical Music.
Under his leadership, the ABO Conference transformed into Europe's largest gathering of the orchestral sector. Mark demonstrated his commitment to international collaboration by securing a waiver from visa fees for Ukrainian orchestras touring the UK.
A globally sought-after keynote speaker and panel chair, Mark has shared his insights at conferences worldwide, spanning the USA, Brazil, China, Japan, Russia, and Europe. His expertise has played a pivotal role in advancing the arts on an international scale.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mark was honoured with an OBE for services to music in the New Year Honours of 2022, underscoring his dedication and impact on the arts community.
Mark's recent ventures include curating Audio Classique in Vienna and Orchestras Now! in Wroclaw. Among his esteemed clients are organsations such as Newzik, ISM, and Cartier. Mark continues to shape the cultural landscape with his strategic vision, unwavering advocacy, and commitment to the flourishing of the arts on a global scale.
