Meet Nikki Reimer.
In this interview, Mark invited Nikki Reimer to create her own fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions where there are no wrong answers. Enjoy her journey below.
Nikki Reimer is a perceptive multimedia artist, poet, creative writer and senior digital communications specialist living in Calgary, Alberta.
Known for work that is inquisitive, incisive and occasionally wickedly funny, Nikki Reimer’s practice interrogates how we experience grief, capitalism, bodies, loss and social infrastructures — and isn’t afraid to laugh when the room gets too serious.
Professionally, Nikki Reimer brings over fifteen years of digital communications expertise to the higher-education and arts sectors, currently serving as Senior Digital Specialist at the University of Calgary. In this role, she leads strategy, content and usability with an empathic, user-centred approach that colleagues describe as “organised chaos with a heart.”
Nikki’s creative output spans print, performance, installation, multimedia work, essays and poetry. Their books include No Town Called We (Talon Books, 2023), My Heart is a Rose Manhattan (Talon Books, 2019), DOWNVERSE (Talon Books, 2014) and [sic] (Frontenac House, 2010).
The latest collection was long-listed for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the Raymond Souster Award — not too bad at all.
Nikki Reimer also created GRIEFWAVE.com, a web-based extended elegy that has been presented in classrooms and community series, and co-founded the Chris Reimer Legacy Fund Society, which supports dance bursaries and creative arts awards.
Alongside creative practice and communication strategy, they are pursuing a Master’s degree in Communication Studies, researching how digital culture shapes our encounters with death, mourning and public memory.
Nikki's Fantasy Cultural Year ... with a magic wand and time machine to hand.
Mark and Nikki imagined a fantasy scenario in which Nikki is hired by a wealthy family foundation to spend a year travelling the world and creating a guide to a particular corner of the arts — poetry being the top contender.
Nikki chose to start in Stratford-upon-Avon, preferring an English-speaking launch point. The year would ultimately build toward a TED talk, book deal, TV appearances, and a global lecture tour.
Nikki wants the project to spotlight Indigenous voices and stresses she’d rather share the platform than be the centre of attention.
Sports & Modern Dance Along the Way
To make the trip more amusingly academic, Nikki is put on limited musical intake and ends up choosing instrumental electronica by Amon Tobin for focus. In Stratford, she’s introduced to Martha Graham’s modern dance, capped off with a celebratory curry dinner.
The journey then jumps to Baltimore, where Nikki picks basketball to study during a world championship event.
Immersive Art in Reykjavik
Mark and Nikki next plot a detour to Reykjavik, where a new virtual reality art gallery lets visitors step inside famous artworks in full 3D. Nikki is particularly keen to experience Jean-Michel Basquiat in this format.
A Week in London (Plus Vegas)
They outline a packed cultural week in London:
✓ a music concert on Monday
✓ theatre at the Globe (Shakespeare)
✓ a Broadway-style musical
✓ opera at the Royal Opera House
The itinerary finishes with a blockbuster film screening at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Personal Tastes & Creative Vision
Nikki shares a love for the Canadian band The New Pornographers and pitches a viewing of Jesus Christ Superstar.
