Meet Shuyun Zi.

In this interview, Mark invited Shuyun Zi to create her own fantasy cultural year from the answers to some easy questions where there are no wrong answers. Enjoy her journey below.

Shuyun (Grace) Zi is a cultural projects professional who thrives at the intersection of arts, research and storytelling — the sort of person who can happily discuss cultural policy over coffee and then calmly organise an international exhibition before lunch.

Working across project coordination, communications and research, Shuyun Zi brings structure to creative ideas and clarity to complex cultural narratives.

An Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s scholar, Shuyun Zi specialises in Art and Cultural Management and holds a Master’s degree in Global Media Industries from King’s College London, alongside advanced studies in cultural economics, entrepreneurship and heritage management across leading European institutions.

She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Portuguese Language and Literature.

Professionally, Shuyun Zi has worked on cultural heritage projects, academic research initiatives, exhibitions, film production and international programmes. A recent highlight includes serving as Cultural Projects Production Manager on a heritage-led proposal positioning the French city of Soissons as a future French Capital of Culture. As part of this project, she curated the exhibition “À Venir, Souvenir”, balancing historical sensitivity with forward-looking cultural imagination.

Shuyun Zi’s experience spans research and programme coordination at The Class Foundation, videography for King’s College London, film production in China, and teaching and event support in Brazil. She is multilingual, working fluently in Mandarin, English and Portuguese, and is particularly skilled at navigating international environments where cultural nuance matters.

Known for her strong organisational skills, calm professionalism and sharp aesthetic eye, Shuyun Zi is driven by a simple idea: culture works best when people feel connected to it — and to each other.

Shuyun's Fantasy Cultural Year ... with a magic wand and time machine to hand.

In a diverting interview, Mark created a fantasy cultural year for Shuyun and here is a summary ...

Paris Vibes & Dreaming Big

Shuyun Zi shares her favourite Parisian building: the Museum of Decorative Arts, overlooking the beautiful Tivoli Gardens. Picture a warm June evening, a pop-up café in the sunshine, an Aperol spritz in hand, jazz playing through headphones, and a book called Anthropologist by S.G. Savas on the table. Pure bliss.

A Year of Creative Adventures

Imagine this: a wealthy Parisian foundation loves her work on creative cities so much, they offer to fund a year of projects—including travel, events, and four more books. First stop: Paris, naturally. Then London, with a luxury loft overlooking Somerset House, dinners, dance performances, and concerts.

Curating Experiences

  • Music: She’d pick movie soundtracks for a full year—hello, Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, John Williams!

  • Dance: A mix of ballet and contemporary, featuring Matthew Bourne.

  • Cuisine: Middle Eastern delights for dinner.

  • Sport Performance: In Berlin, she’d watch ice skating, enjoying sport as art.

Global Creativity Tour

Next up: Berlin, then Lagos, Nigeria, where she explores booming entrepreneurship and digitally enhanced art galleries—VR stepping into 3D artworks.

London Entertainment Week

  • Monday: Go back in time to a concert (maybe Oasis for nostalgia).

  • Tuesday: Theatre—Oscar Wilde over Shakespeare.

  • Wednesday: Musical—Hamilton, live.

  • Thursday: Ballet (Matthew Bourne’s famous Swan Lake).

  • Friday: Movie night at the IMAX—maybe a classic Hitchcock.

Hero Lunch

Finally, Shuyun Zi has lunch with her chosen hero Josephine Baker.
