- Leah Brown - Board level change consultant, trustee and author.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Leah Brown (Board level change consultant, trustee and author). Leah Brown is a legal eagle turned social entrepreneur. Blend the precision of a corporate lawyer, the diplomacy of a mediator, and the vision of a social changemaker and you get Leah, a North Yorkshire native with a heart as vast as her résumé. From law courts to boardrooms, and from bustling cityscapes, she has mastered the art of turning chaos into harmony and hurdles into stepping stones. Mark and Leah discussed Leah's role in the network, her experiences in mediation and created a wonderful trip away to Barbados in her fantasy cultural year. They finished off with the fast-paced This or That game. With a love for deep thinking and big questions, Leah pursued philosophy and politics at Durham University, graduating in 2008. She set her sights on law, completing her Bar Vocational Course in 2011 and dreaming of the courtroom. Unfortunately, immigration rules threw a spanner in the works, but Leah, ever adaptable, pivoted to become a solicitor. She trained with top law firms, including Freshfields and Simpson Thacher, where she honed her skills preparing her to battle the unexpected twists of life and career. The Wayfinding Years: From Law to Leadership By 2017, personal and professional storms were brewing, but rather than sink, Leah found her knack for steering others through uncharted waters. Burnout during the pandemic spurred her most transformative pivot yet: she left the corporate grind, relocated to the Kent coast, and founded The WayFinders Group , a consultancy dedicated to guiding leaders and organisations through the messy business of change. Under the WayFinders umbrella, Leah also runs BroadStairs , a mediation service, and ClearPaths , a CIC that promotes restorative justice and conflict resolution. Together, these ventures are helping to reimagine workplaces, communities, and the very fabric of how we disagree. A Voice for Change: Writing, Podcasting, and Storytelling Leah’s love of storytelling shines in her podcast, The Longest Day , where she interviews leaders about their most challenging moments. Guests like Sir Vince Cable, David Lammy MP, and Lord Ed Vaizey have shared their stories, inspiring listeners to embrace growth through adversity. As a writer, Leah’s work explores themes of diversity, mental health, and resilience. Her forthcoming memoir, My Nearest Relative is Grief, promises to be as soul-stirring as it is thought-provoking. Leadership Beyond the Boardroom A passionate advocate for social impact, Leah serves on the boards of charities like Unseen UK and Big Green Heart. She advises organisations such as The Race Equality Commission and Kent Cricket, blending her legal expertise with her commitment to equity and inclusion. Her affiliations read like a who’s who of cultural and professional networks: Fellow of the RSA, member of the Society of Authors, and a delegate for CSW UN Women UK. Leah’s ability to bridge divides between law and culture, corporate and community, conflict and resolution makes her a true polymath for the modern age. Leah Brown isn’t just about fixing what’s broken; she’s about building a brighter, more reconciled world. Whether mediating boardroom disputes, mentoring future leaders, or writing her next article, she’s on a mission to make freedom personal, professional, and organisational, and a tangible reality. For Leah, life’s greatest challenge isn’t navigating the chaos; it’s daring to believe in a future filled with harmony, equity, and growth. And if anyone can help us find the way, it’s her. Interview summary Mark Walmsley, founder of the Arts and Culture Network, interviews Leah Brown, a social entrepreneur and network full member specialising in mediation. The conversation highlights Leah's role as an "ego tamer," with Mark commending her contributions to the network's growth. In the fantasy cultural year created for Leah, she shares her affection for Fountain Abbey's ruins in Yorkshire, a connection to her upbringing near Ripon and Harrogate. Mark envisions Leah enjoying a serene moment in a cafe overlooking the Abbey at dusk in June. Mark recounts his discovery of Pomery champagne through a chance train encounter with its UK manager. Inspired by the brand's founder, Louise Pomery, a 19th-century French entrepreneur who pioneered brut champagne and supported female entrepreneurs, Mark notes the company's renewed focus on her legacy. Mark suggests a fantasy year-long Yorkshire-funded study trip on organisational change, envisioning a book and TV deal. Leah, with her multinational perspective, chooses to base the study in Barbados for its stable weather and regional challenges. They recall a previous conversation about Bridgetown’s Warehouse and explore further plans. In a playful scenario, Leah chooses romantic classical music, particularly Beethoven, if confined to one genre for a year. Leah recalls a magical year in Barbados arranged by Mark, including a stay at the Crane Bay Hotel, ballet performances by Margo Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, Thai cuisine, world championship sports, and a new art gallery in Bridgetown offering VR experiences. Leah chooses to explore the work of Esha in this setting. Mark and Leah plan a diverse week of entertainment, including a Whitney Houston concert, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night , the musical South Pacific , and the film The Princess Bride . For an upcoming lunch, Leah proposes inviting inspiring figures like Mia Motley, Oprah Winfrey, and either the Archbishop of Canterbury or the head of the UN, aiming for conversations rich in diverse stories and experiences. Leah discusses her broad musical tastes, including worship music, with Mark introducing tracks by Kirk Franklin and David Phelps. They touch on Leah's upcoming lecture tour, book editing, and her fantasy cultural year, which surprises her with its diversity. In a fun, rapid-fire round, Leah responds to choices such as Mac or PC, tea or coffee, and Beethoven or Mozart. Most responses align with her preferences, although she notes her tendency to tackle tasks immediately rather than procrastinate. The interview concludes with reflections on the unpredictability of the future and the unchangeability of the past. You can find Leah on LinkedIn here . The WayFinders Group website here . - Jose Oliveira - Multidisciplinary Artist: Painter, Performer, & Model.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Jose Oliveira - Multidisciplinary artist If ever there was a life fit for the pages of an epic novel or splashed across a mural, it’s that of Jose Rijo Oliveira . Born in Mozambique, Jose's early life was shaped by both cultural richness and the hardships of a nation in transition. His story isn’t just a tale of survival; it's one of transformation, creativity, and ultimately, self-discovery. In his fantasy cultural year with Mark, Jose chose to be whisked away to visit Portugal, specifically to the city of Evora in the South Central region. Watch the video to find out more about his answers to Mark's 10 questions. Growing up in Mozambique, Jose experienced firsthand the complexities of living in a land rich in beauty but marked by political upheaval. Like many of his peers, he served in the military during a time when Mozambique was finding its post-colonial footing. This period left an indelible mark on him, a sense of discipline but also a yearning for freedom that could only be satisfied by self-expression. In his thirties, Jose made a life-altering decision to move to London. Armed with little more than determination and an openness to the unknown, he embarked on this journey to reinvent himself. He took on work as a cleaner, using the opportunity to sharpen his English skills. Eventually, he transitioned to a long-standing role as a security officer, but something within him was stirring, an unfulfilled calling. The turning point came when Jose picked up a paintbrush. What started as a personal reflection grew into a powerful artistic journey. His first major work, a biographical piece, was a visual odyssey through the defining moments of his life. Each stroke told a story: his birth in Mozambique, the rigours of military service, marriages, migration to England, and the heart-wrenching loss of his first child. The raw honesty of his work earned international acclaim, particularly when recognised by a Sicilian arts organisation, catapulting Jose’s artistry into the global spotlight. Jose's art is more than a medium; it's a conduit for emotions, memories, and spirituality. He paints with oils, acrylics, and watercolours, often infusing his pieces with a sense of the divine.. His work spans everything from canvases to murals, with his most celebrated pieces adorning the walls and ceilings of homes, a nod to his love for crafting immersive, boundary-defying art. When asked about his creative process, Jose’s answer is refreshingly simple yet profound: he thrives on creating something "new and unusual," and finds joy in the challenges each new piece brings. But Jose isn’t just an multidisciplinary artist. He’s also a model and actor , a man of many talents. His work as a model has paired him with notable photographers like Gino Cinganelli, Paul Stone, and Timothy James. And then, Jose discovered acting, quite by chance. At the age of 51, he landed his first acting role as a Dutch businessman in an international film that, fittingly, bridged European and African cultures. It was a surreal moment for Jose, who found himself reflecting on the parallels between the character and his own cross-cultural experiences. Whether he’s sculpting, painting, posing, or performing, Jose brings his whole self, his past, his pain, his joy—to every project. And the world is richer for it. You can find Jose on LinkedIn here , on his artist website here , model portfolio here and here . Would you like to be promoted in this way? Her approach isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling alive, fully aligned, and ready to step into the world with magnetic confidence. During the interview, Mark fed his fascination about Jenn's career in the discussion about how she started Stylegasm, created a "fantasy cultural year" for Jenn and finished with The This or That game to find unexpected relatable moments. Her journey to Stylegasm is rooted in a fascinating patchwork of experiences. Jenn graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Virginia Commonwealth University, and soon after, her career path took her to some of fashion’s epicentres. A stint at the prestigious Paris Fashion Institute, a role at Rick Owens as a Showroom Assistant, and hands-on experience at CRISTOFOLIPRESS shaped her as a stylist with a deep understanding of the industry. She rubbed elbows with top designers, assisted stylists, and worked backstage at Paris Fashion Week, gaining an insider’s look into the world of high fashion. Her career took a decidedly adventurous turn when she launched Wildflower Fashion in Bali, Indonesia. Jenn wasn’t just designing clothes; she was creating an experience. Her bespoke jumpsuits and bold accessories made a statement, and her fashion soirees became the talk of Bali’s creative circles. It was here that Jenn’s famed Style Archetype Quiz was born, helping people tap into their unique aesthetic through a process that transcends fashion trends. Style, for Jenn, is about celebrating the authentic you, and she helps her clients embody that ethos with every look. After Bali, Jenn returned to the States, driven to share her passion and expertise on a larger scale. She launched Stylegasm in 2021, which quickly gained recognition as a transformative styling experience. Whether she’s working with entrepreneurs, artists, or innovators, Jenn’s mission remains the same: to liberate and empower creative visionaries, guiding them to not only wear their style but embody it. Jenn has cemented her place as a fearless leader in personal style. From her vibrant colours and eclectic accessories to her refreshing honesty and charm, Jenn Koch is the quintessential Fashion Queen, an icon for anyone seeking to create a style that’s truly their own. Interview summary Mark's interview with Jenn offers a vibrant glimpse into their shared love for arts, culture, and fashion, a conversation filled with wit, warmth, and vision. Jenn shared her vision behind her style consultancy, Stylegasm, which focuses on enhancing personal style while embracing collaboration with artists from a range of creative disciplines. The two discussed their appreciation for originality in the arts and the delicate art of self-promotion, a skill Jenn has mastered. In a symbolic moment, Jenn drew a card from her style oracle deck for Mark. The card she chose was "miracles," a fitting message that underscored the sense of possibility they both shared for the future. Mark painted a picture of a street-side café in Barcelona, where Jenn imagined herself reading one of her self-published books amidst the splendour of Gaudi’s architecture. In this dreamlike vision, she was fresh from a meeting in a Gaudi building, content and creatively inspired. In a scenario crafted by Mark, a wealthy family from Barcelona offered Jenn a year-long contract to study the fashion and style of a different country, with the understanding that she would report back to Barcelona. Though initially considering Saudi Arabia, Jenn ultimately chose Japan, drawn by its deep-rooted cultural heritage and unique approach to style. Mark described how, in Tokyo, Jenn would be hosted by a vibrant group of young locals who would immerse her in diverse Japanese experiences. They conjured a scene in which Jenn could witness a Cambodian dance, a style Jenn admired for its expressive, flowing movements. The duo planned to try Ethiopian cuisine later that evening, sharing a sense of anticipation for what lay ahead. In a lighter segment, Mark and Jenn speculated about the sports they’d prefer to engage in at the 2028 Olympics. Jenn expressed interest in virtually stepping into an iconic Art Basel piece and attending a Rihanna concert. Jenn then introduced the idea of a documentary on tea, tying into Japan’s tea culture. For “Hero Day,” a themed celebration, Jenn imagined meeting her late grandmother, expressing a profound personal desire. She also expressed a wish to meet Nelson Mandela, someone who epitomised resilience and compassion. They finished with a light-hearted This or That game. The heart of this programme? Elevating skills from “Good” to “Great,” one interaction at a time. In Mark's theoretical creative travel agency and 'fantasy cultural year' he whisked Chris off which provided many laughs. They finished by playing the This or That game to get to know Chris better. Chris began his journey with a passion for storytelling, sparked by a love of comedy. This passion blossomed during his formal training as a Drama Teacher at the Central School of Speech & Drama in London, followed by a celebrated stint at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where he snagged the Peter Akerman Prize for Comedy. As Artistic Director of Instant Wit , his acclaimed comedy improv company founded in 1996, Chris brings laughter to theatres and corporate events alike. Through his consultancy Second Curve , Chris mentors business leaders, helping them align with their next professional “curve” by mastering clarity, authenticity, and impactful communication. A true Comedy Creative at heart, Chris continues to inspire teams, bring laughter to audiences, and elevate the art of communication one story, one improv show, and one step up the “Second Curve” at a time. Chris's fantasy cultural year In the interview, Mark guided Chris through an imaginative and reflective exercise, creating a "fantasy cultural year." Chris, an accomplished storyteller, actor, and improvisational comedian, offered insights into his creative world and aspirations while participating in a series of thought-provoking questions designed by Mark Walmsley of the Arts and Culture Network. The fantasy year commenced at Chris’s chosen starting point: the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, symbolic of his deep connection to the city where he studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Mark envisioned Chris at a summer café near the bridge, surrounded by books that inspire him, notably Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People and Who Moved My Cheese? , reflecting his interest in leadership and human adaptability. Chris's journey took him to Kampala, Uganda—a nod to his upbringing in the country—for a year-long study on storytelling. This immersive year included musical restrictions to the genre of rock, with Dire Straits as the primary artist of choice. His time in Kampala featured a unique mix of local culture, such as traditional African dance performances, interspersed with high culture like a virtual visit to the world of Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn. His culinary choice during this fantasy journey was a grand rodízio feast, showcasing his love for communal dining experiences. Sports day featured Ugandan tennis championships, as Chris has an avid interest in racket sports. In the art realm, he envisioned stepping into the works of his comedic hero, Stan Laurel, reliving moments of classic film-making and vaudeville charm through virtual reality. Mark then mapped out an eclectic week of arts and entertainment, inviting Chris to select a pop/rock concert featuring legends like Mark Knopfler, Sting, and David Bowie; a theatre night with a timeless Hamlet performed by Laurence Olivier; and a musical night dedicated to Les Misérables . Opera featured Puccini’s Tosca , and a film evening concluded with Monty Python's Life of Brian paired with Laurel and Hardy shorts. Dinner at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Kampala welcomed the fantasy guest of honour: Stan Laurel himself. In an intriguing twist, Chris speculated that Laurel might wish to be accompanied by his comedy partner, Oliver Hardy, or perhaps Dick Van Dyke, whom Laurel once envisioned playing him in a biopic. The exercise concluded as Chris envisioned his return home, the restrictions lifted, allowing him to indulge in Genesis’ Home by the Sea , marking the end of a year filled with creativity, culture, and connection. Interview summary and James's fantasy cultural year In my interview with James, we embarked on an imaginative journey through his "fantasy cultural year," mixing dreams with insight, humour, and some unexpected twists. We kicked off at a cozy New York café outside the Flatiron Building, where James envisioned himself with a copy of Atomic Habits and a cold beer in hand. The setup perfectly set the stage for his next adventure: an offer from a prestigious New York family foundation to conduct a global research project on the impact of digital technology on fine art. His year would begin with immersive research in Rome, exploring how blockchain and NFTs are reshaping the fine art market. ome became the backdrop for James’s cultural explorations, from hip-hop performances staged amid ancient ruins to enjoying a Michelin-starred Italian pizza. His music for the year? Opera—a nod to his childhood, as his father played it often. Yet, James also stepped beyond his comfort zone by exploring Rome's newly unveiled VR gallery to immerse himself in Leonardo da Vinci’s studio. In a cultural whirlwind, James time-traveled through iconic moments: an Oasis concert, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the Globe, Jersey Boys on Broadway, and an opera—Carmina Burana, echoing his father’s influence. The week's finale was a film night with Hitch, embracing the charm of Will Smith’s romantic classic. This fantasy year also featured unforgettable dinner company: a young Muhammad Ali and the Pope, sharing perspectives over Argentinian-Italian fusion. And finally, freed from his year-long opera constraint, James envisioned himself relaxing on his flight home, celebrating with 50 Cent playing in his headphones. Through laughter, stories, and a touch of nostalgia, this fantasy year brought us an intriguing look at how James’s passions for art, culture, and innovation intersect in both the real and imagined worlds. Steven Lloyd-Gonzalez , orchestral arranger and conductor, has captivated audiences worldwide with his inventive collaborations and contributions to classical and contemporary music. A pioneer of the "symphonic edition" Steven creates orchestral arrangements for world famous singers and conducts the subsequent concerts. (Watch the James Arthur concerts below.) Steven is the first artist on the Arts and Culture Network management rosta . In our conversation, I explored his ideal cultural year, a journey brimming with unexpected turns, humour, and insider stories that reflect his passion and artistry. Steven earned his Master’s in Conducting at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire under Andrew Mogrelia’s guidance, with invaluable insights from Sir Simon Rattle. Advanced studies with maestros like Christopher Adey, Frank Shipway, and Kenneth Kiesler, along with mentorship from Vernon Handley during his time with the English Symphony Orchestra, refined his unique approach to conducting. His career milestones include a remarkable collaboration with Sir Malcolm Arnold, leading a concert dedicated to Arnold’s music in Muscat, Oman, and later conducting Arnold’s rare Organ Concerto at the Royal Opera House Muscat. Steven has worked with notable composers such as Steve Reich, Alex Heffes, Thomas Simaku, Sven Helbig, and Richard Rodney-Bennett. His premiere of Frank Heckel’s Skyfall Concerto in Germany further highlights his versatility and commitment to modern music. In 2005, Steven made history as the youngest conductor of the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. During his tenure, he also supported Daniel Barenboim and Mariam Said in auditioning Egyptian musicians for the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Later roles included Chief Conductor of Kur Sinfonie Bad Nauheim, Principal Guest Conductor of the Capitol Symphony Orchestra Offenbach, and Associate Conductor of Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt, Germany. Steven has led the UK’s premier orchestras, including the London Philharmonic and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and has performed across the U.S., China, and throughout Europe and the Middle East. His impact extends to film and video game music, where he conducted scores for Philippe De Broca’s Vipère Au Poing , Sega’s Headhunter by Richard Jacques, and Sony’s Xenosaga by Yasunori Mitsuda. In January 2024, he joined forces with singer-songwriter James Arthur and the Lufthansa Orchestra for a one-time charity event at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, orchestrating 14 of Arthur’s songs. Three of these arrangements were included in Arthur’s Bitter Sweet Love deluxe album, which soared to the top of the UK charts. ( Watch the videos below ) Steven’s honours include the Salveson Baton, the Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and the Michael Beech Conducting Award. His career is a testament to his dedication to advancing orchestral music across both traditional and contemporary landscapes. Interview summary In my interview with Steven, celebrated orchestral arranger and conductor, I had the pleasure of creating his fantasy cultural year through a series of spontaneous, imaginative questions. Steven took us on a journey from a peaceful afternoon at the Alhambra Palace to a dream year of study in southern France, all while savouring a glass of Rioja. Steven’s answers offered delightful surprises, including his desire to explore mid-20th-century classical music in depth, with a particular interest in the works of Bohuslav Martinů and Shostakovich. His dream itinerary unfolded with him watching his favourite French ballet company, Ballet Preljocaj, performing Romeo and Juliet, followed by a dinner of Croatian peka. With a hint of nostalgia, Steven expressed a wish to attend a concert by Kings of Leon, revisit Sam Mendes’s production of The Tempest, and see Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins on the stage. He shared his hopes to view Shostakovich’s rarely-performed opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and concluded the week with Stanley Kubrick’s classic 2001: A Space Odyssey on the big screen. For his hero day, Steven would invite conductor Carlos Kleiber, poet Emily Dickinson, and, as a playful twist, Dickinson’s beloved dog, Carlo. His year-long musical diet of mid-20th-century classical pieces would conclude with a special return to Abbey Road by The Beatles as he traveled home. It was a lively, inspiring conversation, offering an intimate look at Steven’s musical passions, cultural influences, and personality. Enjoy Steven's orchestral arrangements and his performances with James Arthur: You can find Steven on LinkedIn here . And you will find his website here . Would you like to be promoted in this way? Interview summary My interview with Katie was a dive into crafting her “fantasy cultural year,” a journey that explored her dreams, artistic influences, and core values as a musician dedicated to well-being and community. Based in London, Katie is not only a singer and writer but a passionate advocate for the healing and connective powers of the human voice. Her vision involves creating meaningful cultural exchanges worldwide, merging the arts with emotional and social empowerment. Here’s a look at the highlights and experiences that unfolded in this vibrant, fictional yet thoughtfully curated year. Starting Point: The Heart of London’s Culture and Connection Katie’s cultural year would begin with an immersive experience at London’s Southbank Centre, where she feels most inspired. For her, the Royal Festival Hall serves as a sanctuary, overlooking the Thames and bustling with artistry and expression, a true nexus for her reflective and creative work. She imagines herself here, with a collection of Rumi’s poetry beside her and a decaf Earl Grey tea, absorbing the city’s energy and drawing inspiration from the people and art around her. This location sets the tone for a year steeped in global culture, where every setting serves as a wellspring of ideas and connection. Exploring Africa: Music, Movement, and a Foundation for Well-Being At the core of Katie’s fantasy year is a project that allows her to explore the intersections of voice, community, and well-being across Africa. Supported by a fictional London-based family foundation, her journey would be fully funded, logistically managed, and broadcast-ready, complete with plans for a Ted Talk, a book, and a documentary series to share her findings and insights. Katie’s journey would begin in South Africa, where she has long been fascinated by the resilience, harmony, and cultural significance of choral music, particularly that of the Soweto Gospel Choir. Her goal would be to explore how music, especially choral music, has played a vital role in supporting communities through moments of adversity and celebration. Her travels would then take her to Ghana and Nigeria, where she would delve into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, the unique harmonies and storytelling traditions, and end in Egypt, tracing the ancient roots of musical and spiritual expression in North Africa. Curated Cultural Experiences: A Year-Long Immersion in Global Arts Katie’s journey is peppered with diverse, culturally immersive events, each carefully chosen to deepen her understanding of how music and the arts resonate across different societies: Dance Performance : Upon arriving in South Africa, she would attend a premier local dance performance, fully immersing herself in South Africa’s unique choreography and musicality. To enrich her understanding, she’d let the local guides surprise her with the most authentic performance, ensuring she is fully present in the moment. Cuisine and Cultural Exchange : For a true cross-continental experience, she would indulge in Middle Eastern cuisine, especially resonant in North Africa. With her preference for Turkish and North African dishes, she would experience the shared culinary heritage that flows across the Mediterranean and brings people together over food and conversation. Sport and Movement : With a love for dance, Katie envisions trying her hand at local dance forms and other artistic sports, aligning with her desire to experience performance through movement. Her ideal Olympics would be less about competition and more about collaborative growth, showcasing community and the journey of discovery over the typical contest of skill. Virtual Reality Art and Artistic Icons: An Inspiration-Filled Journey To enrich her cultural perspective, Katie would explore Cape Town’s innovative digital art gallery, stepping into virtual reality to experience the vibrant works of Georgia O’Keefe . Known for her expressive flower paintings and landscapes, O’Keefe’s art would inspire Katie with its bold colours and textures, offering a new dimension to her understanding of beauty, growth, and life’s mysteries. Katie’s ideal cultural week would involve seeing a mix of live performances and cherished art forms: Pop Concert : A vibrant Salsa concert, featuring renowned Venezuelan artist Juan Luis Guerra, where Katie could dance freely, connecting with her love of Salsa and Latin rhythms. Theater Performance : Katie would select Carol Churchill’s Top Girls, a powerful exploration of gender and identity, themes close to Katie’s own work in empowering people through voice and storytelling. West End Musical : She would finally get the chance to see The Lion King, the acclaimed musical based on African culture and music, deeply connected to her interests in harmony, community, and resilience. Opera : For her love of choral music and dramatic storytelling, she would attend Madam Butterfly, a classic that combines beauty and tragedy. Film Screening : She would watch The Woman King, a recent film featuring Viola Davis, which portrays a community of female warriors in colonial Africa. This story of resilience and empowerment aligns with Katie’s commitment to using art as a force for personal and societal transformation. Heroine’s Day: A Dream Luncheon with Iconic Creators During her journey, Katie would have a special day devoted to celebrating her inspirations. For a leisurely lunch in Cape Town, she would invite Eric Whitacre, the world-renowned choral composer known for his ability to capture human emotion and beauty through choral harmonies. This lunch would be more than a meal—it would be an exchange of ideas on choral music’s power to heal and unify, something she admires deeply in Whitacre’s work. Katie would love Whitacre to invite his own hero, perhaps a conductor or choral master who has influenced his work, creating a gathering of artists passionate about the transformative power of voice and community. The addition of Bernstein or a pioneering female conductor could round out this gathering, making it a true celebration of both legacy and innovation in choral music. A Culmination of Wisdom, Art, and Advocacy At the close of her fantasy cultural year, Katie would return home to a warm welcome, with her project documented and ready to share with the world. Her Ted Talk, book, and TV series would all reflect a year of personal discovery, new friendships, and deepened purpose. Katie’s year would be a testament to the idea that art, especially music, has a unique power to transcend borders and nurture empathy, compassion, and well-being on a global scale. With her vision made real, she would continue her life’s work, inspired and recharged, with an ever-deepening understanding of the beauty and power of the human voice. This profile is just one of them. Meet David Thomas (Live Entertainment sales and marketing consultant) David Thomas ... Where does one even begin with a character like David? Perhaps with a brief rewind to his early days in the world of entertainment. But really, the story gets juicy once we leap into his 24-year stint at Cameron Mackintosh. A name synonymous with legendary West End shows, David played an unmissable role in the live entertainment scene, from Cats purring across the stage to Les Misérables shaking theatre walls with rebellion. But this wasn’t just a ticket-pushing job. David was more like a marketing sorcerer, conjuring up the first West End Internet offers and yield management systems, a few years ahead of the curve. Innovation, thy name was David! It is always such fun with David, creating his fantasy cultural year provided many conversational detours, laughs, surprises, and anecdotes. David was the Head of Theatre and Events at Superbreak, where he didn’t just lead, he led. Wrangling deals, driving regional theatre connections, and making sure that whether you were in London or the far reaches of the UK, David had a way of bringing the magic of live entertainment to you. Short breaks were his canvas, and shows his paint. But theatre wasn’t enough for David, oh no. He took his talents to Vivaticket, managing UK operations for this global ticketing giant. Fancy a trip to the Tower of London? Perhaps a jaunt to the Louvre? Yep, that was David's doing too. When the world of ticket resale came knocking, David answered, taking up the role of UK Strategy Lead for TicketSwap. Amsterdam may have birthed the company, but under David’s hand, its British presence flourished. His strategic brilliance didn’t go unnoticed. Those he worked with always praised his knack for spotting opportunities where others saw challenges. Then there’s LW Theatres, where David's expertise in tourism and groups helped elevate the iconic venue group. Oh, and let’s not forget the 17 years he spent at the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers. He practically wrote the book (well, the industry-wide terms and conditions) and acted as Deputy Chair for eight of those years, keeping the live entertainment ticketing industry on the straight and narrow. Now, David keeps things vibrant as the Live Entertainment Ambassador for the Arts & Culture Network and consults on sales and marketing strategy, proving that, even after decades in the game, his appetite for innovation and theatre remains insatiable. And really, would we have it any other way? Absolutely not. You can find David on LinkedIn here . He can be reached by email here . Would you like to be promoted in this way?
