- Ram Rangarajan - Expressionist Artist.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Ram Rangarajan (Expressionist Artist). Ram Rangarajan 's life is a blend of unique artistry and technological ingenuity. With a passion for creation, his journey has taken him across India, the US, the UK, and the Middle East. In his 25-year career in the IT industry, he never strayed far from his artistic pursuits, proving that creativity and logic are not opposing forces but complementary strengths. Mark Walmsley and Ram Rangarajan had a tangent-taking discussion about Ram's work and transition from corporate to creative. What better way to finish the conversational interview off by playing The This or That game! Education and Early Foundations Ram earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from RV College of Engineering (1991-1995), followed by a Master’s in Computer and Information Science from Cleveland State University (1996-1998). Here, Ram’s IT career began in 1999, spanning roles from programming to leadership in digital product strategy. With a knack for analytical thinking and innovation, he held pivotal positions at leading organisations like Intellect Design Arena, and FSS. The Artist’s Journey Beyond office hours, Ram found his sanctuary in art . For over four decades, he has explored the intricate interplay of pencil sketches, charcoal, acrylics, and mixed media. His personal rule — dedicating focused, distraction-free time to art using the Pomodoro Technique — has been influential in maintaining his creativity in a demanding career. In November 2024, Ram reached a personal milestone: a solo exhibition titled "Expression" at the DakshinaChitra Museum in Chennai. This event showcased his ability to transform fleeting moments and emotions into profound visual narratives. The exhibition not only celebrated his artistic evolution but also resonated deeply with viewers, blending traditional techniques with contemporary insights. Art Philosophy: The Unscripted Process Ram approaches art with a philosophy of spontaneity. For him, creating is an intuitive act, free from premeditation. His work delves into the human condition, using every medium—whether charcoal, acrylic, or pen—to evoke emotions that words often cannot express. Ram’s life is a testament to the power of balance, proving that pursuing passion and profession need not be mutually exclusive. His journey has inspired many and today, Ram continues to push boundaries as an artist and thinker. Whether curating exhibitions, sketching early in the morning, or mentoring others, his work serves as a reminder that life’s greatest achievements are often born at the crossroads of passion and perseverance. For those seeking to connect with Ram, whether to commission a piece or provide feedback, his art remains not just a showcase of skill but a medium of heartfelt connection as an Expressionist Artist. Interview summary In the meeting, Mark, the founder of the Arts and Culture Network, introduced Ram Rangarajan, a full member of the network. Ram, an IT professional with a passion for art for over 40 years, shared his journey. Ram is based in Chennai, India. Time management as an artist Ram introduced the "Pomodoro Technique" as a time management strategy that helps focus on tasks. He went on to share his personal rules for this technique, which include using a black pen and paper, dedicating 30 minutes a day to drawing, and avoiding distractions like digital devices. He emphasised the importance of not thinking about drawing before or after the set time. Flower design process Ram discussed his iterative process of creating a flower design. He explained how he initially started with a blue segment and then added more lines and circles over time. He also shared how he added shading and contrast, and how the focus of the design shifted from the initial scope of improvement to the center of the flower. Ram demonstrated how the flower evolved over 16 days, with each day representing a new iteration of the design. Creation He shared a quote from Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, "To create a work of art is to create the world." Ram expressed that this quote resonated with him during an exhibition, as he felt he was not just creating art, but also the world through his thoughts and expressions. This or That Game Preferences Mark and Ram played the fast-paced and fun This or That game" where Ram had to choose between two options provided by Mark. The game involved various choices such as still or sparkling water, Mac or PC, tea or coffee, and more. They discussed their preference for an art gallery over a museum, Beethoven over Mozart, cooking over being cooked for, snow over sand, salsa over reggae, history over science, New York over Los Angeles, Paris over London, and numbers over words. They also shared their sleep patterns, desk organisation, and preferred bedroom door status. The conversation concluded with a preference for seeing the future over changing the past. - Max Hass - Entertainment law guru, bassist & songwriter.
Develop your own profile, network, career, and/or business by joining us at The Arts and Culture Network as a full member. It's just £10 per month. Cancel any time. Benefits are here . This profile is just one of them. Meet Max Hass (Entertainment law guru, bassist & songwriter) Max Hass isn’t your average attorney; he’s a dynamic mix of intellectual property powerhouse, entertainment law guru, and bassist-songwriter with a knack for turning complex legal jargon into plain English. As a founding partner at Holon Law Partners , Max brings his encyclopaedic knowledge of copyright, trademark, and contracts to creators of all kinds—be they musicians, filmmakers, or entrepreneurs looking to protect their brands and ideas. Mark and Max engaged in one of Mark's delightful conversational interviews, discussing Max's experiences and creating his fantasy cultural year. Max's path to the courtroom began on the stage. From his teenage years in Albany, where he graduated as valedictorian of Albany Academy, Max’s love for music became the driving rhythm of his life. This passion took him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied cognitive science (cum laude, no less!) with a minor in jazz music. Here, he explored the intersection of the mind, decision-making, and music, spending hours honing his craft as both a thinker and a performer. The music didn’t stop when Max shifted gears to law school. At Tulane University Law School, he balanced his studies in intellectual property and entertainment law with gigs in the vibrant New Orleans music scene. He played bass for bands like the Maggie Belle Band and The Crooked Vines, even gracing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival stage. By night, he grooved with his bass; by day, he delved into copyright doctrines and civil litigation. After earning his J.D., cum laude, Max took his talents to the legal field, sharpening his skills across roles at firms like Egenberg Trial Lawyers and his own venture, Hass Law LLC. There, he built a reputation for fiercely advocating for artists, tackling everything from music clearance to drafting licensing agreements. He even dabbled in patent commercialisation during his time at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center, showing he wasn’t afraid to push boundaries—whether in biotechnology or funk grooves. In 2023, Max co-founded Holon Law Partners, a firm rooted in collaboration and creativity. As part of Holon’s IP and Entertainment Practice Group, he helps musicians navigate large-scale deals and filmmakers protect their works. His work extends beyond the courtroom—he’s a dedicated educator, hosting workshops nationwide on copyright, contracts, and trademark fundamentals. When Max isn’t lawyering or teaching, he’s strumming his bass in Denver, where he performs with Half Maxx, Danette Hollowell & the Good Guys, and Ellie and the Alibis. A true advocate for artists, Max understands the intricacies of the entertainment industry because he’s lived it himself. Max Hass isn’t just an attorney; he’s a bridge between creativity and legality, a champion of creators’ rights, and proof that you really can blend law and rock-and-roll. Max's fantasy cultural year In our interviews, we create our full members' fantasy cultural years from the answers to 10 easy questions. We have a time machine and magic wand to help. Home Base Max Hass, a talented bassist, songwriter, and entertainment attorney, begins his story in Denver, where he thrives as a musician and creative advocate. On sunny afternoons, Max can often be found at a pavement café, enjoying a decaf Americano or kombucha, reflecting on his dual roles as an artist and legal expert. An intro As a founding partner of Holon Law Partners, a cloud-based US law firm with international experience, Max brings his expertise in intellectual property, copyright, trademarks, and contracts to artists worldwide. The duo discussed how Max’s firm supports international tours and helps global artists navigate US markets, blending legal precision with creative understanding. Iconic Spaces: 30 Rockefeller Place Reflecting on his time at 30 Rockefeller Place, Max shared memories of the summer of 2014, working in this iconic New York building. Its art deco design, stunning artwork, and vibrant cultural role left a lasting impression. Max and Mark imagined a scene at the Rockefeller Plaza ice rink, pondering its transformation into a bustling hub of summer concerts. Entertainment Law in Rio: Research and Culture Mark proposed a research trip to Rio de Janeiro, funded by a New York foundation, to study entertainment law in Brazil. Max, intrigued by Brazil’s rich cultural landscape, envisioned diving into its music scene, exploring Samba during Carnival, and learning from young musicians. They joked about adopting a single genre for a year and considered how such experiences could inform Max’s work back home. Musical Roots and Aspirations Max’s love for music is a central part of his identity. Inspired by bass legends like Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorius, Max cherishes the connections between his musical and legal careers. He described meeting Victor Wooten and the impact of his writing, sharing his dream of seeing him perform live. From New Orleans jazz to the dynamic sounds of Rio, Max’s passion for music fuels his creativity. Exploring Art and Theatre in Rio Art and performance are also close to Max’s heart. He and Mark envisioned a week in Rio attending rock concerts, theatre productions, operas, and more. Max expressed a desire to hear an opera sung in Portuguese and explore immersive art experiences, including virtual reality renditions of Monet and Cezanne’s masterpieces. Cultural Conversations and Quick-Fire Fun In their lighter moments, Max and Mark shared their favourite books and beverages, including Max’s appreciation for Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums and his preference for non-alcoholic drinks. A quick-fire Q&A revealed Max’s love for Mozart, motorcycles, dark chocolate, and history, alongside his penchant for a tidy desk and an early start to the day. Music for the Ages When asked which song he’d leave on the moon, Max chose Prince’s "I Feel for You," a timeless track representing his eclectic musical tastes. Mark suggested a TV show documenting Max’s travels through Brazil, recording with local musicians and celebrating their creative stories. The beginning The fantasy cultural year begins with Mark Noble sitting at a pavement cafe in London, near the iconic Westminster Abbey. On the table next to him is his favourite book, a biography on the life and work of the renowned artist J.M.W. Turner. Off to Venice As Mark sips on a cold Coke, he receives news that a wealthy London family foundation would like to sponsor him for a year-long trip to study Turner-esque landscape and seascape painting. Mark chooses to travel to Venice, Italy for this opportunity. Upon arriving, he is greeted by a group of young art students who whisk him away to a luxurious apartment on the city's famous canals. Link to Mark Noble's page here Dance, food and sport That evening, the students take Mark to a dance performance featuring exquisite waltz dancers, followed by a dinner at a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant. The next day is "sport day" in Italy, so Mark attends a high-level tennis match. Digital Art He then visits a new digital art gallery in Venice, where he is able to step into and experience the paintings of J.M.W. Turner through virtual reality. Range of cultural experiences Over the course of the week, Mark is treated to a variety of cultural experiences in Venice. On Monday, he attends a Queen concert with Freddie Mercury. Tuesday brings a performance of the ballet Swan Lake. Wednesday features a showing of the musical Cats. Thursday, Mark takes in an opera performance of Tosca. And on Friday, he watches the film Star Trek: The Voyage Home on a large cinema screen. As time goes by... The fantasy culminates with Mark hosting a special lunch in St. Mark's Square, where he dines with the renowned American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church and the scientist Sir Isaac Newton. After a successful year of painting, filming a TV show, and securing a book deal, Mark boards his flight home, eager to listen to the music of Enya on the journey. Throughout the fantasy, Mark is able to immerse himself in the arts, culture, and natural beauty of Venice, while also exploring his deep admiration for the work of J.M.W. Turner. The experience provides him with inspiration, new creative opportunities, and a chance to connect with other luminaries in his field.
